Need forum opinion - New VAM?

Post by Rugrat6 » Wed Jun 05, 2019 7:16 pm

I have an 1880CC GSA Morgan with some interesting features. Its a Rev 78, so I looked closely at the date.
Seem that the 18 are double, a clear 7 under second 8, and a somewhat weak 9 under the 0; so I assumed a VAM4?
But then looking closer I see that the right stars are doubled and there is fill remaining in the R, B, and S of pluribus. The reverse also has a fill between the top arrow feather & olive branch. Pictures are attached. Has any one seen such a 1880CC.

Welcome to VAMWorld! You do have a VAM 4, which is a better 1880-CC variety. The other stuff you see on the coin is simply extra stuff that was not significant enough to mention at the time it was first cataloged. Most early CC obverse dies are so full of things to look at, that listing them all would be overwhelming. My unconfirmed theory about this quality control at the Philadelphia mint sent the ugliest dies to CC, since the coins were being made just to coin the silver and would almost never be seen in circulation. PAF reverses also tend to have a lot of "extras" on them when compared with later reverses.

I think this is one of the big weaknesses in the descriptions of most VAMs (not pointing fingers or laying blame!). The characteristics that make it a VAM may not be the best (or easiest) characters to ID a particular coin. Other die markers are always helpful, regardless of how small or insignificant they are. Especially in the age of high-quality and cheap digital microscopes.
