Possible new 1879-S R-78
First I want to apologize, that I can only post LFCP.
I been having problems with my camera white-ing out when I take close-ups with my stereo scope.
This example of the 1879-S with a 1878 reverse has a double profile and cap, which drew my attention.
Does anyone know of a 1879-S R78 with a double profile and cap?
I checked all the listing at least twice and haven't found anything. As always, all help and guidance is appreciated.
Enjoy

Thanks, for taking a look Vam-mysterio.
I am having problem taking detailed close up images.
My camera keeps white-ing out on me.
I will keep trying and post when I can get a clear shot.

Re: Possible new 1879-S R-78
This example has an open 9, and a more broken to broken R.
So, I started with open 9, nothing.
I moved on to Trist (more broken and broken) nothing
Checked all listing of for obvious characteristics – Profile and back of cap doubling, nothing.
All closed 9’s had solid R’s so that was a no brainer.
Liberty is basically void of any meaning polishing marks, but has a slight shift to the right creating a light doubling of Liberty. May not be enough to list. I looked at VAM-96, right after I checked 6 and 46.
The right wing has a gouge that runs from there the inner feathers meet the outer feathers, between number 5 and 6 inward and down toward the right leg. Similar to VAM-51, but one row lower and 51 has a solid R.
Then I started checking for spots and dots – nothing.
These are not very good images, I will keep trying.
That’s when I thought I would ask for help.

I forgot to mention un-polished design initial.

Think the most likely suspect is VAM 34A

Re: Possible new 1879-S R-78
Thanks, gentlemen for taking a look.
I do not see the die markers in the upper part of the RT or the lower part of the T.
If it would turnout to be VAM-34A, it may be needed for a clearer revision on the profile and the rear of the cap and a note about the right wing gouge/scratch.
I just don't see the marks; and I am having trouble getting a clear shot of Liberty.

Didn't see Juan's last post - I'll double down on 34A now

Chief:
Vam 34A is the overpolished reverse
Of vam 34,35,39
In other words
Vam 34A rev is the last on the sequence
Due to overpolishing
And it does show an xtra die scratch on wing
That 34,35,39
Doesn’t have
Hope that helps

Thanks Vam-mysterio and vampicker, for your help.
I believe it is a VAM-24A.
The marks are very faint.

Re: Possible new 1879-S R-78
there will be a new 79s r78 soon, waiting for Leroy to get to it. was pretty shocked when I saw it, and boy does it have a wild connection to several others. I cannot say any more than that right now. and I found a probable new one Wednesday as well. Stinkin obverse has virtually no markers, except an unusual die gouge similar to one already listed. gonna get it under the scope today, and double check it. ,

Re: Possible new 1879-S R-78
Great info!
I’m always on the lookout for a new
1879 s rev 78 die
That being said ,
Here’s some more info:
Based on my research and observations
(My coins)
Vams 34,34A,34B,35,39 ,all shared same reverse,
Here is the sequence based on my observations,
Vam 35 rev was used first ;fresh well detailed reverse
Vam 39 second;somewhat overpolishing showing
Especially inside bow
Vam 34 third, moderade overpolishing showing xtra die gouge on left wing(that vam 35,39 don’t have)
Vam 34A fourth; extreme overpolishing, gouge on left wing still shows
Vam 34B last ,about same degree of overpolished as vam 34A,most Details inside bow almost gone
