1880 VAM 33A confirmed as a Weak E variety

Post by vampicker » Sat Apr 20, 2019 11:48 pm

I just got the package back today and was able to clear up some of the confusion about this progression. The critical point is the question about whether or not the VAM 33A was actually an E clash has been settled. It's weak, but there is an E there. I had included a VAM 33 without the clashing and an example of the original VAM 33B. All 3 listings have been revised and I've updated the pages to reflect the new listings. There are still a couple of questions but they are minor. Here's a summary
VAM 33 the listing reflects the marriage of the exact dies that clash forming the VAM 33A. This is the reverse with the line thru the ED of UNITED. The earlier listing with the lines above We trust is either an earlier stage or another reverse. I suspect it is a stage.
VAM 33A the weak E is confirmed
VAM 33B has been been split into Die 1 and 2 language but its pretty straightforward, Die 1 is the same marriage as VAM 33A but the E is worn away. Die 2 is the original VAM 33B listing. It had the clashed obverse from 33A paired with an EDS version of the exact die used later for VAM 24 and 24A.

I appreciate the help. since the eds ended up elsewhere before I could send it to Leroy, all I could do was hope, and pray. would be nice or see my discovery piece again but I am sure Lloyd's wife has it tucked away.

It took a while, but I managed to eke out this photo on one that I saw in January. It's easier to see where it is than what it is. You really need to be moving it in the light (or moving the light) to see that it's part of a clashed E.

I think I still have a 33A floating around here somewhere, I'll have to check it out. Thanks for getting this confirmed JR! (Any word yet on Leroy's reaction to your 83o v33A theory?)

How does it compare to my 89o v20A I gave you to label at FUN?

If the one you looked at in Jan John, is the one I think it is...Its as late as it can get most likely and still catch the backbone. The earlier examples amount to less than 4 coins that I know of the attributed V-33a and just finding one of any type is an adventure.
