Baltimore show report

Post by impairedsquirrel » Sat Jun 23, 2018 2:46 pm

Figured I'd post this on this side, just for some practice.
I normally try to be "at the gate" waiting for the doors to open on the first day of any Baltimore show I go to, but this time around we decided to wait to go down until the second day (Friday). I was nervous that everything would be picked over, but, as it turned out, not so much! I got to do some catching up with JR, BR, Burch, Doc and Jack Lee and JR joined my family for the consumption of mass quantities of Brazilian beef (and we all did, in fact, eat our fair share! ;) ).
As for my pickin's, they are as follows:
PCGS MS61PL 1878-P VAM-43

PCGS MS64 1882-O VAM-38B

NGC MS63 1888-O VAM-1b1 (JR called it an H2, but the crack splits in the field, so I may have to check into it a bit more, cuz I REALLY don't want another H2...)

PCGS AU58 1878-P VAM-70 (PL coin, bought to eventually send to ANACS because I just kinda want an "AU PL" labeled holder...)

Raw 1921-D VAM-1u (Nothing special grade-wise, but I never picked one in the wild and, ironically, I was just talking to someone about this one earlier in the week)

And last, but certainly not least, a raw MS63-64 1883-O VAM-22A! First one of these I've found in several years!

So, yeah, great time as always!
I go totally NUTS for WOW! VAMs!! Or is that from WOW! VAMs?

Sweet scores rob. Nice subtle Coneheads reference too! I found an 82o 38b (and 17b too) at long beach as well but in 63. And those AU PL ANACS coins are neat. Mine is an au55 PL DC! (A 99s iirc without looking) and sweet hit on the eds scarface even if it is an h2. And a 22a in raw BU hit is always sweet!

I like the 43 and the 22A is a Plus. Let us know if it does make a 64?

Bought an 1860-O half dime with an absolutely wild clash from Brian. Didn't buy much else, but had a couple of great dinners. Walked over to Little Italy with Doc and his wife and Jack Lee. Found Gia's again as I couldn't remember the name but I did recall the sidewalk tables and the grilled octopus on the menu. Hit Vaccaros for desert on the way back - naturally. Friday morning I went out for my morning stroll and grabbed breakfast at the Blue Moon Cafe over in Fells Point. It's a fun place to eat and was featured on an episode of 'Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives' a couple of years ago. Friday night I went out with Rob and his family to Fogo Da Chao and some serious carnivore behavior ensued. Started walking back to the hotel and saw the National Aquarium was still open. I've been doing the Baltimore show for something like fifteen years and I've never had the chance to actually go in. The show was pretty dead Saturday, and I left a little early for my flight. If you have time to kill in BWI, wander down near the end of Concourse B and hit Obryckis. They make some killer crab cakes. The show wasn't bad, but the food was awesome.

Thanks all! The 22a kind of saved it from being a picking stinker of a show...
Jr, I guess that means they let you in the aquarium then? Hopefully you had time to check it all out! ;)

We all had some good chat about that half dime, but I don't think we ever decided if it was caused by "Drunkin' Fred" or "Disgruntled Fred" or "Opiated Fred" or what...

Thought we settled on 'Stubby' - it looks like someone could have gotten hurt when that obverse clashed. The reverse got swapped out, so it was probably a fatal stroke
