Guess the 1901-P grade

Post by DHalladay » Sun Mar 31, 2019 8:12 pm

Two points to mention:
– It's in a PCGS holder (straight grade).
– As hard as a tried, I failed to capture the lustre and flash of this coin. It's pretty amazing for a 1901-P.

When in doubt... don't.

Torn between 45 and 53 on this one. It doesn't have the look of a 50.

My luck with PCGS on 1901 P's, no grade to what was they thinking.
So it's in that range.

Denis I think if its PCGS its an XF 40 and if its an Other its an XF 45. I am holding an XF 45 in hand that looks better than this on in 45 :)

This coin in hand blows me away. It has more eye appeal than the two AU53s I have.

Dennis here is my XF 45 in a 1901 P and yes it seams that both grading companies are employing the SL&L because XF coins should not have the kind of luster found on yours or mine!

Not AU, too much wear. Graded correctly. Nice coin.

1901 P coins all have strikes that are like early 1882 O mint coins, and are not anywhere like most other P minted coins. The grading curve on them and how TPG companies look at them is hypocritical at best. I can take this coin below and put it next to 20 or 30 mixed dates dollars from every mint and not a single XF graded coin would look like this. If I put AU -53 and 55 coins I would say you would find about a 20%/50%/30% mix match with that being AU-50 / AU-53 / AU-55.

Look at 1882 o/s VAM-3 and 4 in AU 53, at this year is a great representation of the strike quality in the 1901 P Mint. I personally see the one I posted as an extremely strong AU-50 and a good AU-53.

The photos below are of a Prior PCGS graded EX-45 that I broke out and plan on sending it out for regrade. My opinion is that the graders are so use too seeing a nice Philly strike that they hit 1901 coins hard. Add the sunken reverse die and then they get even worst.
