1880-O attribution help- EARRIE situation

Post by playtime1 » Sat Feb 02, 2019 4:58 pm

I know I have at least a Vam 48 here and a nicely coined toned in a high grade. I'm curious if you see a possible Vam 49 "EAR" here. IT might be I'm seeing Ear ghosts here. What do you think?

Check neck for clash- if there its 49 if not 48
Pics show possible metal on 2nd 8-but may just be hairlines like shows
on 1st 8

vam 49 is a clashed N at neck & clash at small hair V

Don't need to look for the 49 clash, it's not there. The polished hair tells you that it is not 49, but 48.

...But VAM-49 is clashed pretty strong, so you'd be able to pick it up from a distance... ;)

That curved die scratch between the wheat and cotton leaves is a definitive marker. It's on all VAM 48 and no 49
often the crusher of hopes and dreams

Yes. It is the Vam 48 and it does have the curved line to verify it. Still not a bad coin in MS-63 with some very nice toning. :D :D

Mr John Roberts aka JR and " The Dream Crusher" has struck again in 2019 LOL
I have looked at quite a few vam 48 and never bothered to look in hair for curved line
Goes to show were always learning/ which makes this sport a total blast
Thanks JR
