Today I completed my 78-S long nock set

Post by vamnuke » Sat Jan 19, 2019 7:28 pm

My set is now 100% but well back of the pack at #6 in the registry. Last coin was an AU details OBV scratched V27A bought from GC. What a neat reverse! With the light toning and that the scratch is largely in the hair, it's not too bad as problem coins go. As always, I will update the set as opportunity and budget allow, but am happy as-is. I still have lots of 1878 model year holes needing filled that will be my primary focus. But, my 2019 is off to a good start. :)

Super congrads- The LN set is no easy task -especially with coins that are not road kill terrible details
I personally have got a bit more interested in LN- as i have a bunch found in my ungraded
bulk purchases. Real easy to attribute as well for me. I am not a set guy but super kudos to all
who have patience to assemble sets.
great job -

Nicely done, Clay. AU is a sweet grade and must show well. The 27A was also my last LN. I found a vf grade just before I found one attributed in xf.

Way to go!

And I just peeked at your set. OMG... a VAM 72 in XF45!! That is a monster coin.
When in doubt... don't.

Thanks all; The Tinman got me thinking about this set a few years ago at an ATL GA ANA. Then, I started to collect 78-S dollars when 78-Ps were getting hard to come by. I've put this set together on a shoestring budget and taking advantage of a depressed VAM market. The V72 was (I believe) an underpriced steal from a (reputable) dealer that markets VAMs; saw it in their catalogue and picked up the phone. V60 was a raw attributed Ebay find that graded out. Seems to be one tough die variety. It has been fun completing the set. I am awestruck by the top sets. Back to the hunt with more work to do in 1878 model year.
