Positive Mis attribution stories wanted

Post by UNCLE BINGO » Mon Sep 25, 2023 5:02 pm

So kinda of a silly request from me, but I was wondering if any of you , have ever purchased a" plain Jane " TPG attributed Vam that actually turned out to be something super cool? I mean it's got to happen ,doesn't it? So many listing splits ,8 tail feather renumbering Etc...I have wore myself out pointing out all the bad things that have happened to collector's from mistakes and various opinions in the Vam universe. Just wondered about any possible good stories . Do they exist ??? Thank you all in advance

Not quite, but I think my story somewhat related. A long time ago, I bought an MS 1887-O NGC attributed lamination error. The lamination is very minor near the rim on the reverse. So minor that it took me a while to find it. They missed the fact that it's VAM-3

I once bought a PCGS VF30 1903-S on eBay for less than Greysheet that had crappy photos and pretty significant toning on both sides. When it showed up in the mail it turned out, much to my surprise, to be a Micro-S. I thought it was undergraded so I sent it in for regrade, and it came back VF35. Double score! :D
When in doubt... don't.

Thought I submitted this earlier but it didn't show up.

So... I used to live in Toronto around the time the sitcom "Friends" was really popular.

I used to get stopped on the streets and asked for my autograph as I supposedly looked like Matthew Perry.

Is this a positive mis attribution?

Might be until he became a drug addict and then it went to a negative mis attribution (or at least I hope it did)?

@keilg1
Those are both wins in my book ..... @DHalladay and @Unc90o ..
I absolutely can see the potential for say a v48 hangnail to be a v49... or a 7/8 weak tail feather to be a v44, especially in the old days when all folks had was the VAM encyclopedia to look at ... I know these kind of things have happened.
I'm getting ready to take the 8 tailfeathers class on here . lol gonna have to buy a book it looks like . I will apologizes right now for any stupid question I might have going through those .....

This might be one of those dreaded epic threads ... I'll bet JB has a few stories while putting on stickers.. I was interested more so in collectors stories .... Thanks for the responses so far ...

I probably have a few that were misattributed by TPGs (happens a lot) actually turned out to be better. One that comes to mind was from several years ago where someone sent me an 1878 VAM 80. I sent it back with a VAM 85 sticker on it.

A couple years back on fleebay ,
I saw an anacs yellow holder vam 33 attributed
1878 7/8 tf
Upon closer examination of the obverse
It was a vam 44,
I clicked buy it now
And it was gone!!
So someone got a steal ,
So I missed it by a couple of minutes probably seconds,
By now they probably corrected the
Obvious mistake
Congrats to the astute eagle eye buyer

I bought this one (https://www.pcgs.com/cert/39003430) years ago knowing the attribution VAM 1A was wrong and was sold as VAM 3A1 of which it is. Pretty obvious one to miss even for a VAM weenie like me but I kept it in its holder and had it VSS attributed instead. So always double check the VAM 1A in PCGS holders.
I may not be the best, but I do not know anyone better.

oh soooooo close

.I have even caught myself staring at the " 7/8 tf attributed" coins online looking for that triple blossom with crappy pictures... Maybe the buyer knew ,but maybe not . It is possible the coin still resides in a V33 holder ... who knows ???

@messydesk You are in a very unique position , you probably have hundreds of stories , but thank you for confirming / ( happens a lot) comment .

I guess it all is still hunting and picking in theory... but fun fun fun !

It's suppose to be fun , right????

@lioncutter Your not a VAM weenie at all man . Some of them are easy to disseminate , and some of them are off the hook hard !!!!

I got this one - Positive in that the coin really exists v.s. one that does not - does this count?
