DO THESE PICTURES OF MY 1878 OF THE COTTON BOLLS AND LEAVES LOOK DOUBLED?

Post by bhinkle » Sat Apr 01, 2023 2:21 am

Ever since I saw the 1878 VAM 115 posted here awhile back, I've been looking
through my 1878 Morgan's, looking for doubling.
This one is the only one, that I thought looked like doubling.
Can you tell if there is doubling on the cotton bolls and leaves?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you, Bert

I'd say a possible b/c these can be nuanced (in my humble opinion and based on a limited amount of experience). I have a couple different ones that show variability yet are attributed. Here are pictures as well as other PUPs to help nail down it being a 115 (assuming the reverse isn't for the 198!)

And a second coin that shows the additional PUPs to look for:

Oh, heck, while I'm at it, here's an attributed 198 I have with the same obverse:

Hopefully my thougths will be supported by the experts...

Look closely at the T (LIBERTY) and the stars (especially first 2 on the right)... that is, if you think you have a 115/198 as these help when the cotton bolls are not playing nicely.

I do see doubling on the bolls and leaves, as well as the fold of the cap, I think. The problem is that a lot of 78s have minor doubling all over the place. Look around the rest of the coin for other matches. Peripheral lettering on the obverse is quite useful.

All the 78 II/I obverse dies have doubling all over the place, some more so than others
often the crusher of hopes and dreams

Gary, I would have been ALOT HAPPIER, if you hadn't posted all of your pictures on my post above,
where I was trying to find out, if any of MY PICTURES, of my 1878, showed any doubling.
'FIRST SET OF PICTURES'
Why didn't you start you own post, with all of your pictures, instead of having members think you did?
No one commented on my pictures, on MY POST.

Gary .if you really want to delete pictures . Its easy . Edit the post then open the attachments in the post . Then delete whatever picture file you want from the drop down menu . Its an edit not a delete . it's about all you can do after a post has been made after yours .

My hope was to show examples of verified doubling to help determine if the original pictures showed doubling.

As I read the post, many (me, Jodemyer, Messydesk, and Vampicker) replied to the original pictures so unsure how this was an example of "No one commented on my pictures".

Yes, unclebingo, I do know I can delete individual pictures but the text would remain and that would create more chaos as it'd be incomplete information that definitely wouldn't make sense to others finding this post in the future.

Again, my apologies...

Gary, Okay no problem, I just saw all of your pictures and got distracted and maybe
misread all of the replies and thought they were referring to your pictures.
You had always helped me attribute my coins in the past.
At 79 now, but very healthy physically (knock on wood) this sometimes happens to me.
It is a nice warm sunny day today and I'm headed back into my woods, with my dog 'Sky'
and set and relax and listen to the birds sing and maybe see a deer or two.

@bhinkle, my friend, no worries! We all have those days, for sure.

I'm thrilled to simply interact with all the interesting folks here - and learn a lot along the way. Not that I'm remembering most of it, but I'm trying.

Love the latest pictures - we're with a ton of snow and more on the way in the Rocky Mountains.
