1878-S Vam 62 (Long Nock)

Post by Vamsky » Thu Dec 01, 2022 2:28 am

I was able to pick this up on EBay by hitting the BIN. It's a Vam 62 for sure. Just would like some expert opinions on grade/condition. Thanks y'all.

WOW!
62 is a bear of a coin.

Looks XF40 to me.
When in doubt... don't.

Depending how original the left half of the obverse looks in hand, it could get XF40. If there’s an old light cleaning they might net grade it down to VF35. If it looks pretty raw in hand you might get XF details. If you have time and you’re so inclined, throw it on a windowsill in an area that gets a lot of dust and leave it there for a year and then throw it in a bulk order.

This an excellent find. I agree a V-62.
Mintmark is set higher than normal (but not a high as V-60) and set further left than the other Long Nocks.

Lewis, all the PUPS are there .. the gouge at the top of the arrow feathers where it meets the olive branch , plus the double gouges at the top of the eye. I couldn't see these in the EBay photos, but the mintmark placement was spot-on.

Tim,
The BIN was $235. If it grades it will be a home run. Sent it off to PCGS this afternoon.

Very COOL pick !!! Important COIN !
PCGS takes awhile nowadays on RAW with attributions . My last coins took 70 bussiness days to get back, sumbitted Raw for Gold Shield and attribution . So be patient and if over 65 bussiness days email them . And Yep bussiness days and not regular days . LOL . But Very COOL and NICE pick !!!

Will sell at auction for roughly ten times what you paid for it. I'm continually watching the newly listed 1878s Morgans (and nothing else), guess I am not watching often enough.

Super cool pick- Congrads
i never got into 78-s LN Morgans as many are ugly and
i went for flash like most Americans
I ended up with a huge LN Collection from all my thousands
of raw purchases over 58 yrs. Have not bothered to even grade
any of them. Guess i need to wake up and get em graded &
attributed, as i wouldnt know one from another.

I love hearing that. I looked at 78S VAMs for 3-4 hours aday after working a 12 hr day. The hunt is more than the results. Thats what I think VAMs are about. Its about finding that special coin for common money. I;ve dropped a few $$ for a known 78S coin i needed. Then found it for commo money. The V18 in PCGS 62 for $78 dollars was the one I most appreciated, same week I picked a V18 in PCGS61 for $65. Just a few years ago. Like morganman, I never got big into the LN's. Mostly because the value people put on them was money and ruined the interest. I was a V97 guy. How many 78S guys own one. tough coins or coins with only a few others finding one. At one time i was owner of the only known 2nd example of many VAMS . Those rare VAMs are the interest over money. I need to get back into the game, one day. Enjoy the hunt.

I don't think any of you would have seen this one. I refreshed the page and there it was on top. I saw the mintmark position and hit the BIN. It was probably listed for two minutes. Been looking for this one for about 15 years now. The condition was excellent for this variety.
