New to VAM analytics...

Post by browntrout » Sun Nov 27, 2022 7:38 pm

Hello,

I am new to your VAM analytics and site... I did try to search the forum and may have just missed these answers... I may have found a new, interesting variant of the 1923-S Peace Dollar. I went through every variant, and did not find the odd mark on mine in any of the many variant you have listed. What I am learning is that there are variations of everything! So, I understand the monumental task that you are tackling! Thank you for your efforts. I also beleive I found a variant of a 1927-D Peace Dollar, that "pre-dates" your VAM-3C variant, as the same line comes out of the leaves, but is not quiet as pronounced. This has been an interesting journey so far trying to ID VAMs. I have worked on only about 40 pieces so far...

Anyway, second question... after reviewing all of the variants for the 1923-S Peace Dollar, it came to my attention that some times I see the same variations in different VAM numbers. Does this mean sometimes they care combines, for example (not a real example), one coin could have multiple VAM's for that one coin?

I will also post this to the forum.

Thank you, Greg C. Brown, M.S.; ISA AM; MN '09.

I turns out a single variety (VAM) can in fact be listed twice. There are several reasons for this and none of them are full on "intentional". They are all a mistake of one variety or another. If you encounter one of these errors I would encourage you to share the details of your findings right here on the VAMworld2.0 discussion board. There are a number of folks that play here that would like to know about these duplicate listings. Personally - I am very interested in these duplicate listings when the are in the Morgan dollar section of VAMs. I try (quite successfully too I might add...) to avoid the Peace dollar side of the game. Have some fun playing the VAM game - later.

A good place for anyone to start with Peace Dollar varieties is the http://ec2-13-58-222-16.us-east-2.compu ... bution_101 found on the home page. I'd suggest a long look at the clashed die section. Can't tell you how many newer collectors in this field get tripped up by this.

If you see something specific on your coin, a picture is worth a thousand words. Note, however, that the picture-to-word exchange rate doesn't necessarily scale with the number of pictures.

Hello, and thank you all for your replies! I will reply to each commenter, below:

- messydesk, Thank you! I would be happy to post pictures. I understand, better and fewer pictures are best. Let me see how my first set do, and if you need better images, I will take more with my macro on my camera, instead of using the system I have set up to take coin pictures with my phone. Now, to figure out the procedure to post images here... So sites are easy, so site require third party software/servers... Time to learn more... Thank you.

- vampicker, Thank you. I have already been tripped up by the term "clash" while looking through the VAMs! Thanks for the link, and I will read that next!

- fogie, Thank you! I will get the images posted. What I can tell you right now is this, there is: a) 1923-S Peace Dollar (I know, not your thing), with possible VAM-1AC, 1AR, 1AV, 1DD, and 1EK on it; b) 1927-D Peace Dollar, with VAM-3 and VAM-3C on it; and c) 1934-D Peace Dollar, with VAM-1 (micro D) and VAM-10. I have examined these coins under 30X, and compared them to ever VAM for each of them listed. I have another client's coins with both Morgan and Peace Dollars, and will deal with that next. Thank you.

Thanks, Greg.

The 1923-S Peace Dollar seems to include: VAM-1AC; VAM-1AR; VAM-1AV; VAM-1DD, and VAM-1EK.

The 1927-D Peace Dollar seems to include: VAM-3, and VAM3-C.

The 1934-D Peace Dollar seems to include: VAM-1, and VAM-10.

I hope I am doing this correctly after reviewing the posting pics page, but I may not on my first try, as the VAMWorld pic posting pages does not match what I am seeing at all... I think it was Underdog that used to say (I could be wrong), "If at first you do not succeed, try, try, try again!" GCB.

Greg:

I'm a Mac guy too.
Are you trying to post RAW files by any chance? (that's what I deduce from the .jpeg extension, rather than .jpg

P.S. -- Dr. David K. Close @davidkclose is THE go-to source for anything and everything about Peace Dollars.
When in doubt... don't.

Opps! I did not check the extension, as I thought they were JPG, not jpeg! I will change that and see if that works! Great to know about Dr. David K. Close, thank you! Greg.

I'll start with your 34-D you labeled VAM 1. I would call this VAM 6 - small D tilted right. Use ONE as a baseline for what's horizontal and you'll see the tilt in the mint mark. Proper rotation of pictures is very helpful, if not critical, in identifying these sorts of things.

Messydesk,

Excuse me, and thank you for the instructions! Here is, hopefully, a better, more squared image of the "D" using "ONE" as the line. I will look at the other images, and see if I can do a better job with them. If you have comments, feel free to say them, and I will take the pics according to your advice/needs.

Thank you, GCB.

I see, yes, clearly this "D" is not straight! VAM-6! Thanks!

This is an 1922 Peace Dollar, that I believe to be a VAM-6. Any comments are welcome, thank you, Greg.

Does anyone disagree that I have IDed these VAMs correctly in my images, with the exception of messydesk's correct to VAM-6? I am so new to this that I simply do not trust I am necessarily correct, and messydesk's correction proves that! Thanks, Greg.
