How accurate is the population counts?

Post by demetri » Mon Aug 15, 2022 8:14 pm

I need help understanding the population counts on the TGS websites. The question is how accurate is the population count on graded coins.

Im trying to get the population for PL 1882 O/S Vam 4 EDS in all grades and I have only found three 55, 58, & 62 but then while digging I found an NGC MS61 PL sold in 2005 but it is not listed on NGC population count. Also on HA I saw a PCGS un attributed on label but listed as a Vam 4 eds (not a PL) on the auction, are these counted, (guessing not). Can it be there are only 4 PL attributed vam 4 eds Morgans??

Maybe. Zero listed as PL in the SSDC registry

Here are the numbers of coins that have been graded by ANACS, NGC and PCGS. But keep in mind that "graded by" doesn't mean they are all still in those holders. Some coins from one company may have been taken out of the holders and tried to cross over at another company, or taken out of the holders and tried for a higher regrade at the same company.

The only thing you can be sure of with population report data is that it is not precisely accurate.

When in doubt... don't.

I wonder if there are any early vam 4 floating around in regular vam 4 holders or possibly even miss attribution in PCGS or NGC holders.

As i stated in a earlier discussion the v4 EDS is rare period with super low pops
and st no one gives a hoot, except for a few needed fora PCGS set
Dennis - showing the pops is probally fairly close to correct, but none are exact

If your me, a avid EDS hoarder, you dont have em graded as to keep pops
low, but rest assured only a few around -over many yrs
If you think to get rich on a AU-PL think again as not a ton of interest-DARN IT
uSED TO BE - IF ONE SURFACED it got scarfed up for big money

A sign of times with few heavy hitters to purchase for sets

Yeah I saw some of the earlier numbers, got crazy there in the beginning. I am new to vams and totally hooked, digging EDS too so was curious about numbers. That is smart to hold them blind but Im not good enough to attribute myself, although getting better all time. I got three of the last four submissions right including the eds so thanks to you, other enthusiasts and vamworld itself, keep bringing in new blood.

The "populations" for all the major authentication companies report only the coins received AND graded by that company alone.

Also, the tables do not include any coins deemed not gradable, or not accepted.

Thus, for all except a tiny minority of date/mint/denomination combinations, "population reports" are close to zero utility.

The way to obtain useful information out of Pop Rpts, is if you already have a complete census of the coin in question.

Right! I kind of suspected that. I guess it only can be used as a rough estimate that is always changing.
