I'd liken it to the difference between banging around in a cigar box as 'old stuff' vs being passed from hand to hand in commerce. Mar the surface enough and you really can't/shouldn't call it mint state
Yeah I guess your right, I got a lot to learn about AU coins. I appreciate the guidance and knowledge you share. Somehow I got circulated in my head as the main culprit. This poor coin has definitely had a hard life somewhere lol thankfully it survived and was discovered and attributed. Its safe now.

Next quest is understanding cleaned coins better, Im sure I have the same rationale in thinking so I better dig in lol

Here's a link to a raw 1878 v188 that I posted. PCGS called it au58 twice (no p/l) it came back from ANACS au55 P/L.

Yeah that looks like it alright. These are like in between coins, they must have "banged around" for decades in a box somewhere lol Looks like you got a nice find too on those links, nice pick.......

Proof-like is a description of the relative mirror-like reflectivity of a coin's fields. It is NOT part of the "grade" or condition of a coin

It would seem to me that PL DMPL is a measure of reflectivity, not condition unless the condition interferes with the reflectivity. Grade would be an indication of circulated or not. In theory a PL or DMPL coin should be attainable at any grade. But the practical side of it says that at some grade of circulation the wear has to interfere with the reflectivity. I have trouble thinking it can go lower than 55 or 53, and maybe even at the 58 limit.

 Your 1882 O/S Vam 4 EDS - Straight grade au55, hoping it holds is a win
in itsself. Vam 4 EDS is known for a very few in PL
Many yrs ago Logan Mckechnie found one in 62PL
and i believe Ash Harrison sod it to a client for
around $17k if memory servrs correct

Today they seem under appreciated, especially
as pop numbers verify thr rarity
Damm shame as i have a few, picked over some
40+ yrs.

Im thinking i will send a handful to JB to send in
a PCGS bulk sub, and attrib VSS.

@morganman that was a vam 4 eds ngc62dmpl, and i helped get it from logan to ash. and as been said, pl or dmpl is separate from grade. pl and dmpl has to do with reflectivity.

How very interesting.

Logan cherried that coin at the November 2006 Santa Clara show. I was there on just the 16th and carried it back on the plane home that night. On the 17th I drove to Orange County and submitted it at PCGS for $100 Walkthrough Service grading. I still have the original submission form yellow customer copy. The grade (MS62DMPL) posted on the 21st and I picked it up in person on the 22nd. Logan had sold the coin for $30K and had me FedEx it to Ash that same day. Ash resold it for a price I know but will not disclose, to a buyer I know but will not name.

W ow; Dennis- What a great story and glad you shared
I was off on price etc, but at least i remembered, as i was a O/S nut
I have never seen a o/s dmpl, all these yrs picking etc
Those were the days when one could make big bucks pickin/re selling

Logan made some bucks but i fear he used it up doing shows and
who knows what? I am somewhat pessismistic about his whole deal
at this point.

Fascinating, wow I think that 82 o/s ms62 is the highest graded right? I very happy to have this one in my collection, I cant wait to get it back to see if the conservation made a difference in appearance. Last month I snagged a 1886 P vam 20 and found a PCGS graded 3+2 unattributed. The O/S was in my collection for at least 5 years before I found it. Im hooked on 82 o/s now but dont have 40 years left to try and get another EDS LOL Just goes to show they are out there.

Ok, so I think you may be confused about "PL". An AU coin is supposed to have some luster left, so, by default, you SHOULD still be able to see mirrored fields (in the less contacted areas) on an AU coin. "PL" has everything to do with mirrors and nothing to do with wear...
I go totally NUTS for WOW! VAMs!! Or is that from WOW! VAMs?

Not as cool but here is A PCGS AU-55 1892 Philly that I am sure would be prooflike at ANACS or NGC.

That's a nice pick. I like PCGS too but have only started submitting and used Anacs as my first choice. I was not sure what grade this coin would get and thanks to vamworld was able to at least attribute the EDS but even then I was not 100% sure. So Im finding out that only some TGS will PL an AU. I was kind of shocked it happens at all really. I figured always that AU meant circulated but I now can see other wear not just circulation can bring grade down so in essence it is really an uncirculated coin with enough wear (from other coins) to be an graded an AU. It was a good learning experience. Had I sent it to PCGS it might only be an AU55.
