Minor 1882-O shake-up

Post by messydesk » Mon Jul 04, 2022 6:49 pm

I went through a handful of "listing clean-up" coins today and fixed some stuff in 82-O.

82-O VAMs 1B, 26, 26A, 42, and 42A are all the same die pair. VAM 42 is listed with C3a, but Leroy’s picture is of a VAM 26A with the crack under the 1. Both earlier (no crack) and later die stage (lots of cracks at 1) specimens have the O set to the right of VAM 26, so the 42/42A die pair is being eliminated as duplicates. VAM 1B only shows the clash pictures, although it is most likely a duplicate of VAM 26 and will also be eliminated. The clashed VAM 26 is not EDS, as there are vertical scratches in the ear that aren’t super crisp. Both dies have matching clashes, so this isn’t the case of a clashed obverse married with a fresh reverse. This makes me think there’s either another variety that is a duplicate of VAM 26 or there is an unclashed VAM 26 out there.

So here's the fallout:

VAMs 1B, 42, 42A - gone.
VAM 26 - III2 17 • C3n without clashes. This can exist, since the clashed version shows mated clashes on both sides
VAM 26A - Former 1B/26. Clashed We, t obverse, clashed M reverse, no die break below 1.
VAM 26B - Former 26A. Clashed as 26A, with break below 1.

Agree. Thanks John. Raising another person's child is never an easy thing but with persistence, patience and a fair share of care it is possible!

Thanks for the clarifications on this messydesk. None of these tasks are simple edits.
We all have a lot of work to do to 'adjust' the many similar issues that are in each Date/MM list. Is there still an experts list so we can consult on this?
The criteria for adding a new VAM has improved over the years from the first 'big book' in 1971 and hopefully there will be diligence and more extensive use of date and other pictures going forward to help us find the right VAM.

JB; Great to see some work devoted to 1882-O
Thanks, as its quite a favorite of mine

Years earlier the O/S EDS used to be worth a pretty penny due to low pop
but it seems now no one cares much. Even the v4EDS seems to not attract
much attention these days. Natrually i have a huge O/S collection both LDS &
EDS. Very damm frustrating for me

Any members wanting 1882 O/S from AU-MS in LDS & EDS should PM me with
questions.

Again, Thanks JB

I need to give credit to Fogie who pointed out these duplicates and sent me the coins to examine. Coins in hand definitely make life easier.

I noticed a note in the VAM 29A page that a later die state has been separated into VAM 29B but there is no 29B entry?

VAMs 29 and 29B have been moved to the "Dubious" listing category under suspicion that there are no differences among them and that they're all VAM 29A. This would have to be proven before they can be removed from the catalog.
