1882 GSA Carson city grand snake history.

Post by JackBnimble01 » Mon May 16, 2022 3:06 am

Came across this article from the early
1970s, wondering if anyone ever heard
Of this off center grand snake Carson
City coin? Can imagine if it was valued
At 1k in 1973 what todays value would be?

Never heard of the term "grand snake". Does the article show a picture?

Must be a term someone made up at the time to describe the off-centerness, but it never stuck. Such a coin showing up in a GSA holder would be significant even then, and much more so now. My WAG is $10K or more.
When in doubt... don't.

The article is so blurry I can not see anything
To make a clear identity.

Just located some info that Mr. Fred Weinberg
Was involved, with this coin from the beginning and attached is what he states and
Some commentary from a few others.

@JackBnimble01, what a wonderful series of stories within a bigger story that is still unclear.

Myth? Lore? Reality? Doesn't matter... Joseph Campbell would approve of this version of a hero's journey even if the hero is a round slab of silver (or not...).

I have a copy of the Margolis booklet (1973) and the reverse is pictured several times. Pixelated, but there's enough there to conclude the coin was a VAM 3A. Hopefully it still resides in its GSA holder.

I can't wait to see this one. It will sell for Big Money, but not more than the 86 die cap brockage. 40-50K for a GSA CC 25% off-center feels right to me. Then again, if it's the only GSA off-center being sold into this market, 75K wouldn't surprise me

The Error Trends Coin Magazine small booklet titled Mint Errors on Carson City Silver Dollars ©1973, has quite a few pictures and seven pages of information on this 82-CC off-center.

Having this publication is another fantastic find! Love to have that reprinted so we could all own a copy... Any way to digitize it and share it (like many publications in https://www.gutenberg.org/)?

The NGC site has a cert. lookup function, and closeups of this coin were available. I'm curious what made them certain this is an 1882-CC, since the tops of the numerals are so distorted.

From the newspaper article it seems the US Mint labled it a 1882 when sold to the first buyer, perhaps it came from a bag of 1882s. Maybe the obverse and reverse clashes, mint mark location help identify it as an 1882?

Most likely it came out of an absolutely original 82-CC bag

Well, all kidding aside, that is a super nice coin. The 1921 morgan 15% M.A.D. Was spectacular. I wish i knew where it was.
