DPIS added to Attribution 101

What's that, and why?

DPIS stands for Date Position Indexing System, and offers a more precise description of the lateral position of the date than is given in the VAM book. In addition, it uses the base of the 1 relative to denticles as its landmark, which should be familiar to everyone collecting VAMs dated from 1884-1904.

Future additions to the VAM catalog for Morgan dollars dated 1884-1904 will include the DPIS score in the official description, as well as the traditional near/far/normal. The DPIS score will also be phased in for existing listings when they undergo more rigorous die studies.

It's pretty easy to use after you've done it a few times

I've found the DPIS to be a simple and powerful tool.
As I do not view most coins in hand, and have to rely on auction photos, the finer features of the coin may not be visible.
But even in a blurry picture, the date position is discernible.
Thanks for the constant improvements.

A smart guy introduced it to me a long time ago. The first time I saw it was on the 1889-CC die study that John Roberts did. I have referenced it myself for notes I take. Great addition to the site. It is easy to catch on.
