Need help with an 1881-S

Post by DurhamJnKY » Sat Jan 22, 2022 12:17 am

I learned a new definition for the word "porosity" thanks to this little headache, but that's about it. Everything else is sending me down rabbit hole after rabbit hole, so I'm turning it over to the experts..

Here's what I'm seeing...

The obverse die looks to be on it's last leg.
-Extensive light pitting (porosity) throughout the entire bust and in the majority of the denticles. Looks like an effort was made to remove it from her face that left her with whiskers on her chin, a rash at her mouth, and road rash on her forehead. The profile below her lip is polished away.
-The majority of the periphery looks beveled. (When I rotate it looking for a cartwheel effect, I expect the line to stay straight. This one curves at the edge.)
-Fangs on both 1's and are starting to appear on the majority of the stars and Motto.
-A lot of the lower hair has been polished away. Also, the lower part of the designer's initial is nearly gone.
-The ear and 18_1 look doubled but that may be from fatigue.
-The field has several post-mint scratches but there is quite a bit that isn't.
-There's a small chip in the bottom of the I in LIBERTY.

The reverse Is in much better shape.
-MM looks tilted right with the loops partially filled.
-Minor scratches at the legs and tailfeathers.
-Very slight bit of porosity in a few locations that is either old or partially polished away.

3 sets of pics for this one.

Any help at all will be appreciated.

Jonnie

The first 8 looks legitimately doubled on the lower right. I'd start with that, because that's probably your best hope at attributing it. This is a horrible date to attribute because of all the die fatigue and machine doubling.

Thanks for that. It helped.

I believe it's a VAM 21. Just need to decide if it shares the obverse of V16 or V32

In the photos of the obverse of both I can see matches with doubled 88, over-polished hair, porosity, and the file line in the R (extending into the E) in LIBERTY. I don't see the small chip on either.

I'm leaning more towards VAM 21 paired with VAM 32 obverse. I can just barely make out the line to the right of the second 1.

Another thing I have noticed on the reverse is some short file lines coming off of M_RIC.
