1878-S Vam 11 Found !

Post by 78-sLongnock » Mon Dec 06, 2021 6:31 pm

Hope I caught your attention,
Actually, it’s a Vam 77 in an old ANACS Soup Box Holder
Bill Rawlings is the credited Discover of the 1878 S Vam 11 in July 1967.
Jim Baxter is the credited Discoverer of the 1878 S Vam 22 in Sept 1977
Robert Bruce is the credited Discoverer of the 1878 s vam 77 in Oct 2002
& John Robert’s on a coin from Jason Henrichsen is the Discoverer of the Vam 111 Sept 2011.
The 78-S Vam 111, 22, and 77 was the progression of minting and are all related as having the same OB but different Rev Mint mark and polish lines locations.
The 78-s Vam 11 was believed to be part of this progression. As those who do die study’s know, it is extremely hard to kill off the Existence of a Dubious Vam. This historical 1878 S ANACS VF 25 Old White ( soup box ) holder was graded and attributed as a Vam 11 in Early 2001. This is actually a Vam 77. So this is another nail in the dubious Vam 11 coffin.
PS when it was Believed (before Oct 2002) that Vam 11 didn’t exist, the existing Vam 11 population was overwritten into the Vam 22 pop reports

I’ll be keeping this Soapbox Vam 11/77 in its original Holder for historical reasons.
If a Vammers has the vam 11 discovery piece or document from Bill Rawlings, please send me a note.

Leroy didn't have anything to do with the VAM-11 being thrown into the VAM-22.
Maybe Leroy's archives will have something useful about the VAM-11.

So while working on an 'About VAMs' column for the VAM 22, I've come to the conclusion the 'original' VAM 11 listing likely crossed the VAM 6 with what became the VAM 22. The issue appears to be the crossover of work from Van Allen's 1965 solo book into the first edition VAM book from 1971. That 1965 edition uses the nomenclature II 9 / B2b for his number 303 and notes it is Klaes Fig. 12 - that is actually VAM 6 if you examine the Klaes plate. Van Allen used consecutive die numbering across the mints in the earlier work, then dropped it. The description was correct back in 1965, but when the 1971 work came out II 9 was used for the VAM 11 obverse. I can't prove it, but there's a logic to 'lost in translation' that makes sense to me.

 Fantastic history lesson:
JR mention of LVA 1965 is surreal- 57 yrs ago
1/2 century + and LVA /Mallis were at work
with Morgan Errors/Vams.
A holliday shout out to all here involved with
die studies and history appreciation of same.

I personally applaud members here that have
patience/ability to further vam knowledge thru
die studies etc. I dont have patience or willingness
to even think of such endeavors, but totally enjoy
reading of all studies/discoveries

Merry Christmas All !!!!!
