Unusual 1900-S, vam not found yet?

Post by vamtiques » Sat Nov 27, 2021 1:47 am

Now I ventured out to my very first coin show last Saturday, had a great time, and among other coins, bought 2 Morgans, this one, and a fascinating study on another one I'll post later.
This 1900-S is prooflike (both sides), but extensively bagmarked and is either AU-55 or 58. It is a 2 olive C3 reverse, but when I tried looking at all the known 2 olives, no matches are apparent, unless I have a LDS with interesting die cracks not mentioned on the 00-S pages. Another interesting die crack is connecting the ES-OF-wing tip, and down through America. On the obverse, there is an interesting die crack that starts near the M monogram and continues through the lower hair, and another crack that starts at Liberty and turns down to the hair.

Have you checked the Die Crack attribution guides? There are four of them.

I have for the 1921s, those I know, but I can't find the 1900-S, unless these are filed under some of the subheads on the home page for the 00-S. So far I can exclude all of the non C4, C4/C3 reverses, and the non 2 berry reverses., but no real matches unless I have a LDS/EDS state of one of those vams. Or I could have a newly found vam?
Still no matches despite looking...

Not sure of the VAM # but I think this specimen is far too beat for an AU-58/55.
May even be cleaned .Good luck either way though.

I don't think it's cleaned when rolled around in the light; it's really reflective (prooflike) in protected areas, and I know many of these marks are most likely bagmarks. I looked again at vam-12, somewhat close, but does vam-12 have that die scratch above the mintmark on the bow region? It could be a EDS/LDS stage, unless I have a discovery coin... I still hold to an AU-55 (details) grade based on just the light looking wear, and then I add the details designation from all the bagmarks.

I have to agree with Felix.

You have a VAM-12. If the coin is clashed (left serif of the N) then you have an LDS. If the coin is not clashed, then you have a VAM-12 MDS.

So this appears to be a vam-12 on some points, but this begs the question, are any vam 12s known to be prooflike and EDS? Reason I say is that this is not an exact match to the vam-12; my coin doesn't have the same level of die cracks as the page of vam-12, nor do I observe that fine die polish streak at the back of the neck above the M monogram.

PCGS has a pop report of 86 PL 1900-S and 4 DMPL coins. So, they are out there, but just not that many. Your coin has die cracks on the obverse and reverse so that would rule out an EDS. Look's like your coin is un-clashed so that would make it the die stage just before the die's clashed (LDS).

So after thinking about it a little more, I'll say vam-12 MDS then .

That would be correct.
