1885 P Raised area on wing

Post by indian4 » Tue Aug 13, 2019 11:31 pm

The right wing has a raised area on that I don't clearly understand. Might it be grease on the die?

Pretty coin, pretty confusing.

Grease or any other debris on the die always results in depressed area on coin. Die damage such as
gouges, scratches, polish lines, etc. always show as a raised area on the coin. Lamination errors when
still attached show as a raised flap. The area that you circled looks damaged after strike or PMD.
Relief is difficult to determine from photo. Hope this info is helpful.

I'll see if I can get a couple of better shots. I need to learn to think in 3 dimensions.
