1921 Peace $1 PCGS MS66?
Does anyone on here have a 1921 Peace $1 PCGS MS66 for sale? Must be white or mostly white CAC or no CAC. Not a VAM subject but maybe someone has one? PM me. With 192 on the pop, real or imagined, you would think there should be more availability.
Thanks,
Dan

I admire your gumption in searching for a real MS-66 1921 peace dollar. The major grading companies do not seem to consider detail when grading these, and grade inflation has made a real MS-66 into at least a 67 or better when in a new holder. Detail of design is always a problem for this design and most coins - regardless of "grade" - have only average detail.
This sample might give you something to compare when considering detail.

Back in the late 80's...

A 1921 with detail similar to the posted photo is almost "never too expensive."

Thanks for that photo, Roger. What a stunning coin. Agreed that coin is miles above most MS66 coins.

A key "takeaway" is that the numeric "grade" and strength of detail are not related to one anther by the TPGs. Thus, the posted photo could be anywhere from "AU-58 to MS-68" and still have the same detail as shown. My suggestion is to look for the best possible detail first, then numeric grade.
Also, since many buyers depend on numeric grades for their auction bids, a really well detailed coin can go for much less than one with poor detail and a high numeric grade.
Look in my little book "A Guide Book to Peace Dollars" for an illustration of various levels of detail on the 1921 coin obverse.

Pay special attention to the upper surfaces of inscriptions, the detail and roundness of rays, and so forth on both sides. We are so accustomed to seeing multiple "flat" areas that we have nothing for comparison. That's the purpose of posting the photo.
