Easy enough to go on eBay and search completed listings. Anyone can ask anything for a coin, but an idea of what actually sells may spare you considerable aggravation

Your post states it is a 1878 p.... Maybe he was tongue in cheek in the reply.. Also Dennis keeps a fairly up to date
list of recent prices for sold coins, maybe ask him for recent sales?

The last recorded sale for this vam according to the vam sales database was 5 years ago and between private parties this is not a easy vam to aquire it is priced accordingly

It's worth noting that the line between VAM 18 and 18A has only been a clear distinction for a couple of years. When 18 was listed, they were all 18. Then when 18A was first listed for the small radial break, it really applied to all of them, so they all were 18A. The revision (2014?) noting the polishing in the wings is when we got clear demarcation between stages

Just for the record. A coin, NO MATTER what it is, is 'ONLY' worth what another is 'WILLING' to pay for it! four years ago, a full Scarface was around 10k in low to mid MS, now it's approx 6k. Just an example, others will vary on demand. There are VERY FEW VAMs that are of limited numbers, those will still achieve top dollar...kenny

Keep in mind that populations go upward as more are found.
Wise VAMmers have reminded me of this a few times.
Populations of VAMs go up, not down. Just one of many factors that change a perceived value.
