Mark Kimpton Discovery Coin Collection

Post by Shyatt01 » Wed Aug 17, 2022 5:55 pm

Hi all,
10 years ago I bought a large collection of coins from Mark Kimpton, the author of the book "Elite Clashed Morgan Dollars".
(It was a big pop, but he was nice enough to let me make installment payments over the course of a year. )

There are 123 coins in the collection.
23 of them are the plate coins that he used for the Super CD book.
1878 VAM-2A Super CD
1878 VAM-42A Super CD
1878 VAM-44A Discovery PC Top 100
1878 VAM-203A top 100
1880 VAM-11A Discovery PC Hot 50
1880 VAM-24A Discovery PC Super CD
1880-O VAM-49 Top 100
1880-O VAM-6C Discovery PC Top 100
1882-O VAM-29A Super CD
18885 VAM-9A Discovery PC Super CD
1885 VAM-23A Discovery PC Super CD
1887 VAM-12A Discovery PC Top 100
1888 VAM-4A Super CD
1888 VAM-11A Discovery PC Top 100
1888-S VAM-3A1 Super CD
1890-O VAM-1B Super CD
1890-O VAM-4A Discovery PC Super CD
1900-O/CC VAM-8B Discovery PC Top 100
1901-O VAM-1A Super CD
1901-O VAM-25A Discovery PC Super CD
1902-O VAM-26A Discovery PC Super CD
1904-O VAM-4B DIscovey PC Hitlist 40
1921 VAM-40A DIscovery PC Hitlist 40

Of the 131 coins, 92 are Discovery Coins. (There would have been more, but 11 of his original discovery coins were "delisted" over time. I couldn't get John to label them "former Discovery coin" :D )

I recently sent the collection to ANACS, to reholder and label them. All of the coins in new ANACS holders, labelled "Mark Kimpton Collection". The coins which were plate coins also have that on the label. And of course the Discovery coins are labeled as such. (Thanks John, for your hard work. )
The one exception is an 1883-CC VAM-5 MS63PL which is still in the GSA holder, with an ANACS label on the holder.

I paid 50K for the collection 10 years ago. From a pure investment point of view, I would have been much better served to put that into Bitcoin. but I've owned a piece of VAM history for 10 years, so what the heck.

I suspect that I won't get 50K if/when I sell the collection at auction, especially if you factor in the buyer and seller premiums. And I'd prefer to keep the collection intact, rather than scatter it to the 4 winds in an auction. It's a historically signficant (at least to VAM collectors:)) collection.

I will sell the whole collection for 40K, if there is anyone out there that wants to step up and take advantage of a once in a life time opportunity. If you are SERIOUSLY interested, DM me, and I'll send a spreadsheet which lists all the coins, with grades.

I am NOT going to piece it out a coin at a time, it is the whole collection or nothing. (Selling at auction is still my plan B, but a couple of folks recommended that I post here to see if anyone had a serious interest, before I sent it to an auction house. )

The grades of each coin would probably help your effort.
When in doubt... don't.

Great coins- This post makes me so glad i refused to chase PCGS set deal & etc
To many folks lost their butt or worse, which is not fun and leaves a
sour after taste.

Heck, Im pissed when i run across single Morgan Vams i paid to much for.
Im livid that my silver hoard is now losing money after holding 4 yrs
I was lucky to hedge my position using Options Puts on commodity mkt,
recently taking a huge cash profit, which helps me hold onto my silver
stash until it becomes profitable. To bad you cant hedge Vams & coins

Many here simply dont have the means to acquire such a collection
Collecting is fun, but i ask, at what price, as there are many coin guy
wives really pissed about hubbys addiction LOL LOL

Guess its all better than sitting in a bar getting pickled for 30 yrs
We all have our issues, so i guess we should enjoy the time we
have and be happy for it.

Steve,
Wow that set is a very cool piece of history.
I hope that someone buys to whole set to keep it together.
Best of luck,
Lee

Bumping this post from the actual owner since there was speculation about it. I'd be interested if the group as a whole met his expectations at auction.
often the crusher of hopes and dreams

There were a ton of $80 and $100 winning bids in the auction.
When in doubt... don't.

I’m not Steve, but I did consider buying the collection when Mark was offering. Knowing what the selling price was, I expected he was hoping for a little more. As Dennis pointed out, a lot of those DCs went for $80-100 which I would consider a good deal with that provenance.
