Re: 1878 CC vam 19B question

The 'dot' is lame - it's the fill inside the mintmark's first C. You have a VAM 19B. It will not have the obverse break of VAM 19A as it is a different obverse die.

Re: A link or brief explanation please

If the listing is eliminated, you can send the piece back to ANACS and get it updated at no or minimal cost. Just PM me if this comes up.

Re: OT - Feed Finger Gouges Or ?

Yeah, looked at this for a long time and didn't come up with a conclusive explanation. That's also not exactly the same description I used. I could swear I settled on some wording about obv & rev die gouges. The senior numismatists can overrule me. Glad they left my 'not certain' wording and recomme...

Re: 1902 O Belly Button

It's unrelated to the VAM. It's a striking error. It's most commonly found on 1885-O dollars. There have been several theories advanced about its cause, but I think the most plausible is the dies being set slightly too far apart. This same striking error is behind the weird hourglass shaped depressi...

OT A little older

OK so a lot older. I went to the Ohio State Coin Show in Dublin today and was looking for a couple of pieces I couldn't find and some stuff for a type set which I did find. But the thing about shows is you'll run across stuff you didn't know you wanted until you see it in hand. I ended up with this ...

Re: 14.17 sold tonight

I ask because to me it seems sometimes the truly rare stuff sells for more if it's unattributed. Hard to pick a better 78 variety of any sort, let alone one of the key 8 TF marriages off an auction site without anyone else spotting it.

Re: 14.17 sold tonight

I gotta ask - did you give it a couple more bids because it wasn't attributed?

Maybe look for a listing that notes a die scratch on the wing. Bet you find it pretty quick

1878-S VAM 115 discovery piece pics

I have Clayton's example on my desk again today. I want to head off a potential future problem here. The close up plates are shot from a different and slightly higher grade example. I took full coin shots of the discovery piece today.

Re: New 1883-CC VAM? Like VAM-5C/D but no clashing

It is VAM 5B. There are minor stage variations within this section of the progression that would never warrant a separate listing. The key here is the clashing from VAM 5A is polished down and the VAM 5C clash hasn't occurred yet. The other stuff you pointed out on the lower reverse is strike doubli...

We'll eventually get there with all of them. Had a special request for this one. I remember being surprised by not finding a match for the RPM when it landed on my desk

Re: 1886-S VAM-2 oddity

Years ago I had a 96-S that had something that looked like a pig's nose on the 6. Leroy was not amused. He said damage followed by circulation. I'll say the same thing now, but it is a little funny at least

Re: 1926-S Peace Dollar DDO

This piece is worth taking a long look at. Parts are deceptive but others offer a textbook look at strike doubling. Take particular note of the I of LIBERTY. See how the primary image has thinned out from the shearing effect involved. The primary and secondary images taken together add up to the nor...
