Re: 1900-O VAM-54
You guys know the deal with 'two-fer' discoveries. As much as some of you don't like these, something like the VAM 54A would also be the VAM 54 discovery piece. It's not a huge stretch that this die pair would exist without the breaks that define the later stage. The actual VAM listings are official...

VAM 54 isn't delisted. It's marked as 'unconfirmed' unofficially.

Re: Howard's coin ????
At least some of this is PMD. particularly the diagonal stuff. I'd think it's better than 50-50 that all of it is damage from impact within its bag

Yeah, this specific reverse is part of a larger story and is noted for other markers. Fun!

Re: Checkmark mystery
The revised listing is now official and notes the checkmark. Thanks for the heads up about the reported discoverer possibly being inaccurate. I'll leave his name out of the column. I haven't written it yet but it will be in Coin World towards the end of April. And a special thank you to Brickie Your...

Re: Checkmark mystery
Nope, the first guess was spot on. 80 Philly VAM 44. All the attention goes to the eye, which is understandable. Not sure I noticed the clear checkmark on this until I was shooting pictures for my next column a couple of days ago.

Re: I and R numbers
I remain glad to be rid of them and still feel my vote to kill these off was the right choice. The original intent of Van Allen and Mallis with these was helpful, but over the past twenty years or so, there have been individuals that had used the I/R numbers to grossly inflate prices targeting newer...

Re: Trying to pinpoint my (weakly struck?) 1921 Morgan.
Weakness at the date and lower stars is a striking issue and not related to any specific variety. Without any scribbles or a recognizable crack pattern you'll be stuck with a generic VAM 3 designation.

You could also do a search for the 'break o' that's present. I'd bet you find the base pair quickly then are just left to figure out this stage.

Re: 1882S Obverse of V3 Reverse of V8
It's easy. Just go to the company website. There's a link to the submission form with detailed instructions. Write possible new VAM in the variety field so they know to send it to me. Overall, it's cheaper to send a few coins together rather than just one, mostly due to the shipping and insurance ch...
