Re: Big Problem with this 1878 P B1 Reverse with a CUD

No question about this being deliberate damage with deceptive intent done outside the mint. There's a press or vise involved along with some material like thick leather or gasket material protecting the obverse. Not sure why they didn't also cover the reverse area that's involved. It would have made...

Re: VAM Thing FUN 2019

My presentation '12 VAMs for 2019' will be just before it at 2:45 in the same room W304-A. The set from my program will go live in the SSDC Registry shortly afterward. Hope to see you in Orlando.

Re: Shortnock's 1878 P Mystery

Yeah, I'd say Mitch nailed this - VAM 232. The lines in the wheat leaves limit your choices to the Type III obverses. VAM 232 has a stage with the line in O that mimics VAMs 227-1 & 228B. The die lines in the bow loop are similar to VAM 230-3 as you noted. I can also see the diagnostic dot on the ba...

Re: Edge of an E?

I'd say it's a phantom and not actually an E. On all of the documented E clash Peace Dollars. there's a strong outline of the angle of the chin and neck below the E. I can't imagine the letter would transfer without also getting the chin & neck mark as well. I think this outline of that portion of t...

Re: delete images please

Thanks for migrating the old VAM World to a new site over far too many volunteered hours, but it had some unintended consequences, so out come the daggers. Once an image is posted online, it is licensed by the site and is no longer the exclusive intellectual property of the original photographer/aut...

Re: OT: 1857 Mexico Republic 8 reales

Their legal tender status dates back to the creation of the United States. The Spanish colonial 8 reales or milled dollars were typically good silver of a fairly standard fineness and weight. The were accepted in commerce almost universally. Many of the notes of the Continental Congress were denomin...

Re: OT: 1857 Mexico Republic 8 reales

The dies have a great hand made character to them. Love how uneven the date is. That rim to rim break is pretty damn cool. Die rotations on the Mexican branch mints are somewhat common, but still kinda neat. Great piece!

Re: 1878 CC vam 19B

I think over time we'll find VAM 19A is the rarer of the two. While both are legitimate rarities, neither really qualifies as 'super duper' rare anymore.
Now, if anyone happens to find either in a GSA holder, I'd really like to hear about it

Seems like a solid coin for the money, but the middle of the market seems to be kinda soft. Too many quality coins and not enough buyers.

The ANACS pop shows 5 examples with obverse DMPL. The top is 65 OD 1/0 The pop doesn't account for the different die numbers

Re: 1924 Peace Dollar VAM-1D1 and 1B1

I own the discovery piece for VAM 1BB. I've shown it to a fairly large number of VAM collectors. It's kinda funny watching the reactions. The Peace guys all see the E clash right away. The Morgan only guys can almost never spot it.
A clearly evident partial E clash is present - period.

Re: A Super CD list question..

The whole back story is in the intro chapter in Mark's book, but the basic gist of it is I showed him my 04-O VAM 28A discovery piece, and he got very intrigued by clashed dies and being able to discovery new things. So yeah, it's not just that the first reported G clash was shaped like a trigger, i...

Re: OT - Trade Dollar 1877-S Small and Large S Varieties

There are actually three sizes for this year. Looks like you have the large and small S mintmarks, which should be roughly 1.17 and .85 mm tall. The medium S should be about 1.1 mm tall. While the small S is listed as 'rare' in older literature, I'm dubious of this claim. It is true the two smaller ...

Re: New VAM-e by Leroy

Leroy's focus was on the RPM itself and why it looks the way it does. The obverse isn't part of the story he's bringing to light. The VAM 4 is much easier to find and is availible in mint state. Both VAM 4 and 28 are well represented in AU grades
