Re: 1880-P I'm stuck - Help or suggestions please

There aren't many with the pincers on top of the 2nd 8. Maybe VAM 19. Is there pitting between ONE and DOLLAR and/or a strong polishing line at the right side of the upper serif of the L in LIBERTY?

Start with the engraved feathers under the wings.

Re: Fresh Back From LVA on 1881-O VAM 1L

I still think it's occluded gas. There are markers visible in his pictures that are visible on VAM 8 without these lumps -- the scratch above the mint mark, and a couple in front of the ear. If we can get our hands on the VAM 1L discovery piece and poke it with a stick, this one would probably go aw...

Re: Date on PCI Slab?

That one is early 90s. Their grading was good then. Double-check the attribution, though. While VAM 1A was known then, not much else about 1921-D was.

Re: 1878 8TF VAM?

Messy desk is way too modest. Besides being head moderator here, he is also the current president of the Society of Silver Dollar Collectors, and is owner/operator of Variety Slabbing Service – a highly accurate and respected VAM attribution service whose attributions are even used by Heritage Auct...

Re: 1878 8TF VAM?

...Believe it or not I ended up with 13 8TF in the deal, all between MS62/MS64 all PCGS graded in older holders. This was the first one I picked up. Im hoping to see what has VAMs, what would warrant variety attribution by a TPG, what needs to go to CAC, and what would upgrade. My eyes are bleeding...

Re: 1878 8TF VAM?

Looks like Brian (vamsterdam) misinterpreted the initial pictures when he saw them. You initial assessment of VAM 14 was actually correct. For 1878 8TF, the hand-engraved feathers under the wings are the first things we look at, and magnification is critical for these. There is so much doubling and ...

Re: Slanted 1890

From what I can see on your coin, I'd probably call it VAM 14. Date in normal position, slanted upward. The doubling on the ear might not be visible on yours, since the obverse looks EDS, and the doubling on the right inside of the ear usually shows up with die wear.

"some dated political element"? Seriously? Why does everything these days have to have a conspiracy angle? Why does everything have to be due to a sinister political agenda? "Fun with '21" is 18 years old. Maybe the updated information has simply fallen through the cracks during the passage of time...

Thanks Messydesk, so am I understanding this right. The 78's are the only ones that have both long and short there are no other years that have short-nocks?
Right, and it's only on the 78 7TF Reverse of 78 (parallel arrow feathers, flat eagle's breast) that it comes into play.

Re: Long-nock confusion.

It's irrelevant for the reverse of 79. The 7TF reverse of 78 has long and short versions, but there are no such variations for other reverse hubs.

Are you saving as JPEG or as some other format? Try saving as a smaller size, like 64x64. Many avatars are smaller than that. You could also e-mail me the image you are trying to use.

Thanks Tom. I agree that my VSS 88A is actually a 1BQ. I was making a public teasing of J.B. in the hope he would see it. Just seeing it now. I'm sure this is neither the first nor the last 1921 with my label that needs correcting. I'm just glad there's someone hard at work steadily improving...

I would check the mint's website. They usually have that info there. Don't confuse mintages with product limits, which take packaging into account.
