Clear explaination for thin or tapered coins

Office of U. S. Assistant Treasurer New York July 1, 1873 Hon James Pollock, Superintendent of the Mint Sir: The enclosed half dollar piece was found in a bag of silver coins of the same denomination received from the Mint. You will notice that it is not of the usual thickness, and this depreciation...

Re: 1881 O Rim cuds?? What is this

The term "rim cud" is a bit of a misnomer that has been used for so long that it kinda stuck. A true cud is a rim to rim die break with uplifted fields that extend past the denticles into the field. A "rim cud" refers to rim die breaks. Many rim breaks are produced as a consequence of collar clashe...

Re: New Morgans for gold

Previous instructions, going back to pre-Civil War were that standard silver dollars were only produced on the order of silver depositors. They were tariffed at $1.04 to $1.08 in gold. (This was in part a result of 1853 reduction in smaller silver coin weight and legal tender status.) Collectors wer...

Paying for new 1878 dollars in gold was, initially, not an option.

Re: OT - Feed Finger Gouges Or ?

You're welcome. The physical situation of open vs close collar is more complicated, but the brief explanation of "fishtailing" will suffice for usual purposes. Increased die erosion farther from the center is a product of greater planchet metal movement, which in turn erodes the die. A primary steel...

Re: 1878-S dollar. Can you separate fact from fiction?

I understand about die states/"progressions" etc. I merely give that less reliability than some others do. RE: "Series 1 used collar #1 Reed count 186 for Vam 60, 26 EDS, 57 stage 1 and 2, Vam 26 LDS, Vam 57 stage 3, 4 and 5." Accordingly, the Ajax press was equipped with SF dollar collar #1, as wer...

The "rays" seem to be radially oriented - not parallel as expected from some coin striking damage/

Re: 1878-S dollar. Can you separate fact from fiction?

These three might help. The April coinage report has not been located. It should have been in E-229 among several boxes that contained only SF letters and documents. The May-June report is from one of those boxes and shows the quantities of good pieces struck from each numbered die. (Usually, such t...
