retained strike-thru scrap?

The "hat" on the S in PLURIBUS on this 1921-P is kind of fun – but what is it?

Re: 1889 23A

Mega-congrats to both parties!
This is only the 4th example I am aware of trading hands since 2004, all of them between private parties and all of them AU58s.

Re: 1921-P... Scribbled Scratches and Broken "2" in Date...?

OK, that explains it.
I have 5 VAM 3DAs and none of them have the gouge. So you may have a new addition to the 3DA sequence.

Re: 1921-P... Scribbled Scratches and Broken "2" in Date...?

My bad... I thought you were talking about the crack.

I see what looks like a gouge through the E in one photo, but it doesn't look too convincing in the other photo, so I can't really offer much of an opinion.

Re: 1921-P... Scribbled Scratches and Broken "2" in Date...?

What you're seeing through TES on the reverse is a die crack, which are profoundly common (and sometimes more extensive than makes any sense) on 1921-Ps.

There are D1 and D2 crack guides elsewhere on this site that many of us use to make VAM attributions, rather than using scribbles.

Re: 1921-P... Scribbled Scratches and Broken "2" in Date...?

First of all, you see which reverse type you have (D1 or D2). Your coin is a D2, which about 80% of 1921-Ps are. Then you see if it has scribbles (your last photo), which your coin has a TON of, and which makes things very easy. Then you go to the 1921-P D2 Reverse Scribbles page and a start scrolli...

Mitch:
That's it! Thanks!
But I can't believe it isn't in the die crack guide. And the scribbles guide obviously needs this updated LDS photo.

Re: 1921-P help needed

There are also a few very old cracks on the coin:

There are a couple of strong gouges in the lower part of the Y in Liberty's headband, and a lot of polishing lines between the cotton bolls:

1921-P help needed

This is a D1 reverse. There are no scribbles, but there is a heavy horizontal gouge at the bottom of the right opening, and a long, snake-shaped gouge on the eagle's abdomen: raw1921 scribbles.jpg By far the most distinction feature on the coin (if this isn't a new discovery I can't believe it doesn...

Hey Dennis, that wouldn't happen to be the VAM-7 you got from me a couple years ago, was it? If so, that's awesome cuz I sold that one because I found an AU53!! LOL! No, that was an unattrbuted 'pick at Great Collections in March. None of the coins submitted had a CAC sticker, but the Long No...

At Greysheet Bid it's pretty darn hard to say it's too much.

Think you already know and are just hoping you're wrong. That second U in UNUM tells the story ... damage. All of the scratches around the area are from that same grinding hit.

The stuff on the reverse looks like die scratches though.
I agree with J.R.
