Re: 78-S V-19A date
Lee: I have two coins that look like Xerox copies of each other: semi-PL, neon-bold and blazing blast white, with a slightly 'dished' look on both sides. Both are also VAM 19A. Neither has any shattering at the date, although there is a crack from the top of the 1 over to Liberty's bust (doesn't sho...

1885-CC VAM 4 pixs & questions
Just received this slightly PL coin and found some interesting features that I hope someone can enlighten me about. 1. what caused the part of the clash inside the yellow box? 08233570clashwreath.jpg 2. It it normal for VAM 4s to have clashing above the arrowheads? 08233570clasharrows.jpg 3. What is...

That's remarkable!
I have a PCGS-62 in my database that sold for $190 back in 2010, and an NGC-61 that went for $113 in 2009.

Re: Interesting new 1921-P
Chris: I'm old school; I use an old Nikon DSLR, a macro lens, and extension tubes. Coins that are any degree of EDS are almost cheating because the scribbles are bolder. Real photographers would be horrified at my approach to lighting (a single gooseneck). When I find a feature I want to capture I r...

Interesting new 1921-P
I recently bought a group of 5 NGC-63 1921-Ps on eBay. The photos were good enough that I was reasonably sure I could identify them all. Plus, an eBay Bucks special made them stupid cheap, so "Buy It Now" it was... It turned out I was right; I did identify them all. And one was interesting – a very ...

Re: 1889-o Vam 20-A and 20-b
Back when VAMview was still doing a Retail Price Guide they were strongly thought of, and my database of sales has two raw MS62s going for $2,500 each in 2007, as well as a PCGS-55 going for $1,495 in 2008. Prices have dropped a LOT since then and... -- I have seen no Mint State examples of either 2...

Re: 78-P A1l reverse question
I have been assembling my VAM sales database since 2005, which now contains over 47,000 entries. In that time I have just 22 entries for VAM 14.15, the highest of which is a 62DMPL (next highest are three AU50s). It is a genuinely rare coin, but early on they seemed to appear occasionally enough tha...

"Indented in" means it is not a 1 in the denticles, otherwise it would be raised up. It most likely means what you are seeing was caused by something hitting it in that area.

Egads! PCGS screwed up
I'd been having trouble being 100% confident about which VAM this 1879-CC was, but VAM 2 seemed to be the last option left. Silly me... believing the PCGS label that says only "1879-CC VF20". My photos say otherwise, don't they? 30516973 date.jpg 30516973 God.jpg 30516973 nose.jpg 30516973 CCs.jpg

Re: how to start a date set at SSDC?
Thanks Lee, it worked great!
I had seen the new set button and window, but I didn't realize it was a pull-down window with ALL the options, instead of just 1878.

how to start a date set at SSDC?
I've looked and looked for a "start this set" button (or something like it), but to no avail. Can someone help?
The date I want to start is 1879-CC.

Re: I knew it was too easy....
Chris: VAM 44 is really, really hard! The few examples I've seen in person, plus a couple I've talked to their owners about, all have two distinct diagnostic characteristics: – they are somewhat PL – they have a fairly large finger feed gouge patch running from the rim through the A in STATES and do...

pixs of a very EDS 1921-P VAM 3GY
Just got this in the mail (PCGS-64). It's NFFPL... Not Far From Prooflike.
There aren't even faint traces of a crack anywhere, but there are nice polishing lines through the date and LUR.
The scribbles detail is also profoundly more extensive than what is on our attribution page.

Stellar photos!
And it looks like a very high grade coin.
Sorry, but I know zilch about 1879-S VAMs.
