Re: Availability of updates of the encyclopedia of Morgan and Peace dollars
The last update to the VAM book was 1991. The number of varieties added and removed from the book in the last 30 years is more than what was in the book then. It's best to follow up with anything to match to the VAM book with a look in VAMWorld to see if anything has changed.

And with a few clicks and keystrokes, 1AO is eliminated.

Re: 1921-D VAM 1AO - is it valid?
Yup. VAM 1P. I see there's a VAM 1P1, 2, and 3 listed, too, and no real feeling for what the real die progression is among them. Obviously, with no die cracks, this should be VAM 1P1, and VAMs 1P2 and 1P3 would have to be sorted out.

Re: Morgan 1885-O Broken S
Given that hubs did break, such as the 'r' shown above, it's entirely possible that the "isthmus" of this s deteriorated on the hub over time, as it starts out very narrow. Nevertheless, it isn't a listable feature and shouldn't be used to guide attribution. VAM 17 looks correct.

Re: Amazing…
Couldn’t be an inside job? Well, let's see. It's a corrupt government with regions of the country controlled by drug cartels, which probably also exercise a lot of influence over ports. If the longshoremen in season 2 of The Wire were as corrupt as they were despite union pay and benefits (OK, fict...

1878-S VAM 58 SP65
A collector who bought this major rarity this year just posted a long thread about it on PCGS's forum. A few of us have seen the coin in person, and it's definitely special.

Re: Morgan 1885-O Broken S
The 's' is irrelevant. Start with the date and the mint mark. Chances are if you were to remove the polish residue around it, the 's' wouldn't look broken, as this is normally a very thin part of the letter.

Might be a silly question, but does your car have a USB charging port in it?

Confused by the paper trail on these. This thread indicates no tail feather gouge on 3A1c.

Re: A visit with Leroy
Very cool get-together! I like the old school T-Square on the wall in the background used for manual drafting. A testament to his early engineering days as a mechanical engineer. Good training for the minting process. He was a draftsman for a while in his early days. All of the illustrations in his...

Also, if you look closely at the picture with his book, you'll see a box for one of the 2021 Morgans. John R brought one to show him. He hated it.

Re: A visit with Leroy
What's not immediately apparent from the picture is that his VAM book is about twice as thick as normal due to extra pieces of paper and photos stuffed into it. The binding is an unrecognizable pile-up of layers of tape. Besides his numismatic projects, he has also kept busy designing and painting r...

Re: 1882-o 38-b value
If they'd garner any premium, it would be very minor. They are not particularly rare. I see lots of folks trying to squeeze big prices out of them... the key phrase here being "lots of folks". Still a REALLY cool VAM, though! And this is a perfect example of why no R-numbers will be assigned to new...

It's an overpolished die. Could be a brand new die that was just polished too much before being used.

Re: 1921 Peace dollar
First coin looks like an AU58 that also has a reasonably good strike (much hair detail visible, separation between wing and leg, leg feathers well-defined). The second coin is horribly struck, but is probably technically uncirculated. No better than 62 because of the strike, even though there aren't...
