Re: Milk Spot Question

As far as I know, milk spots that have been seen on ASEs and other mint products are permanent and are a result of improper planchet preparation. The APMEX rounds may spot for the same reasons, but I haven't heard anything specifically about them.

Maybe one day @RogerB will surface some sort of correspondence regarding it." Additional San Francisco Mint do...

Doesn't ring a bell. Cracks aren't well documented for 21-S yet, so from here it's just another 21-S with a die crack.

Re: The 78 Acid Treated Funky Feather We All Ignore

Never realized Philadelphia produced any coins in 1878!! Are any of them worth collecting? lmao The Funky Feathers always refer to the San Fransico Mint. Now I need to reevaluate everything I ever thought I knew about Morgans. I now know that I know Nothing!! Thanks for raining on my parade. I bet ...

I would label this as VAM 1F1 EDS, noting that the breaks aren't yet fully formed.

Re: OT - New CHERRYPICKERS' GUIDE Publication

Looks interesting, but I'd want to see additional examples before consenting to a certification Intriguing, indeed. I would call the exact coin pictured FS-501, since it's the coin in the book, but I would be reluctant to call anything else in low grade FS-501 unless I could get a good look at the ...

Re: Congratulations to John Coxe!!!

Indeed, congratulations are in order. PCGS seems to be ramping up variety attribution. They're also going to start recognizing Shield nickel varieties from the 1994 Fletcher book (good luck finding one) and John Dannreuther's proof nickel coinage book. Hopefully, they're not biting off more than the...

When coins from multiple people need to be compared, it's best to coordinate submissions so that the coins in question arrive at roughly the same time.

Re: OT: A long journey ends. (update)

Just received the coin back from PCGS. Stunned that they graded it VF25. Hammered stuff is usually very unevenly struck. As such, they need to look at the best struck part of the coin to determine the extent of the wear, which tends to be even unless the coin has been bent. So did they put ...

No Morgan dollars, but their first attempt at a silver dollar (1846) should be in there.

500th Catalog Update

I just entered the 500th update to the VAM catalog since I started doing this last year. An update is the addition, deletion, revision, or renumbering of a VAM. Renumbering actually counts as two, since the former number is deleted (part of the database design). If you want to follow along at home, ...

Re: 1921-D VAM-1N2 to 1N3 transition point?

Anyone else have anything that resembles this or something later? This one is the latest die stage I've seen, but depending on the light, you can still see the top of the D and the horn. I think I want to reserve 1N4 for the die chunk being further gone such that there's no gray area, especially in ...

Re: What is this called?

The obverse rims look pretty fat and the letters LI and Y look weakly struck. It also looks like you're missing flow lines on the left obverse just inside the rim. There's no real reason a tapered planchet has to be evenly tapered on both sides. The obverse side could have been nice and flat, while ...

Re: What is this called?

Not sure how a tapered planchet would give a strong strike on one side and a weak strike on the other. I also haven't seen a coin struck through schmutz that looks like this. Does AMER in AMERICA have any of that grease-filled look to it? Agree that the weight would be good to know.
