Re: Interesting question on prooflikes in general

Polishing that produces mirror-like fields lasts as long as it takes for the die to naturally deform and produce what we call "luster." Polishing and basining are repair actions for die faces and can be done at any part of the die life. The extent and aggressiveness of polishing determine if pre-rep...

Research CD

The research CD "Silver Dollars Struck Under the Pittman Act of 1918" is available individually from Wizard Coin Supply, or in bulk for club use from the author. Re: 1921 Denver Fun 'self-healer dies' Hypothesis:

As a die wears, small cracks usually expand. But if the alloy boundaries and crystals are unusually distorted, the crack might appear to close or become obscured as the die face continued to deform. Radial Z-axis displacement can also merge with invisible cracks. Eventually, a visible "starburst" ef...

Re: When striking pressure is too high

Glad to be of help. The From Mine to Min t CD was sold shrink wrapped with the book at no extra cost. That is, anyone selling the CD separately has broken up the package. For 1921 Morgan dollars, the information in FMTM about setting strike pressure in a toggle press could be useful. The CD really h...

Re: When striking pressure is too high

First, check the CD of "From Mine to Mint." Then an internet search for academic articles on impact shock in austenitic steel, crystal boundary deformation in hardened/tempered machine steels. The alloy of US Mint dies was not consistent so one batch might produce great, long lasting dies and the ne...

Re: When striking pressure is too high

RE: My daughter never got to blow up concrete in college, as she wasn't much involved with materials science and structural stuff. She's spending this summer simulating blowing up stars at Los Alamos. Type I or Type II? I just read an interesting related article: Caiazzo, I., Burdge, K.B., Fuller, J...

Re: When striking pressure is too high

150 T/sq in was the max for silver dollar dies. Above that, as seen in Dec 1921, dies chattered, exploded, warped, etc. The video clip shows a cylinder, not a properly shaped die, which is much wider below the die face. Also, hydraulic pressure transfers force differently than a toggle or drop press...

Re: PCGS pop report mystery

Last time the Navy Blue Angels were in Cleveland, one of them confused an eagle which landed in a coin dealer's shop and started pecking at her reflection in a PL Morgan dollar 1881-S VAM 11-2/3rd.

I vote for completely false dies, not an alteration.
Could be. Do you know of others like it?
Letter and digit shapes are incorrect. Depth of relief is way off, rim is incorrect, etc. etc

Would be more interested if it has eight tailfeathers.
It does. They are merely on the other side of the eagle.
