Re: I and R numbers
When trying to express how difficult it is to find a scarce or rare VAM, it's best to express that against the date and mint as a whole. 1878 8TF have been studied for so long that the relative rarity of each variety compared to that of a common one is very well known. That series also has enough fo...

Re: PCGS/NGC PL question
PL standards have shifted around a LOT over the past 35 years at grading services. Some of the coveted old holders are the most leniently judged coins when it comes to that designation. There are coins in old DMPL holders that are barely PL.

Re: 1892 V 3 partial collar question
A partial collar is when the planchet is not fully surrounded by the collar die when struck. The edge of the coin will have reeds that don't extend the entire thickness of the coin. They're also called "railroad rims," because the edge has the shape of a train wheel.

Re: 1880-S VAM-7 Update comments, descriptions, move incorrect reverse pictures to VAM-7A page, add pics of earlier obve
I added the VAM 122 page and moved the VAM 7A entry to the eliminated varieties section. The VAM 122 page can be populated with stuff from the 7A page as appropriate.

Re: 1878 8TF
For 8TF always start with the beak to narrow it down to 1-17 or 18-23. For 18-23 you can quickly go through the possibilities. For 1-17 go to the engraved feathers. In many cases, that will narrow it down to just a couple. Then go through the possible obverse matches to see which it is. If you start...

Re: Reputability of SEGS & PCI?
Keep in mind that there have been close to 10 different reincarnations of PCI, some good, some not. This makes it hard to say what their reputability is. Yeah, the old green labels are actually pretty legit. Those with the Century Gothic font very often upgrade. They also are famous for very vivid ...

Sure enough. Nuking VAM 131. It never existed.
I'm revising VAM 1BN to include more of the die markers I saw.

i Like the DPIS , although it is not really something my brain carries around with it quite yet , it is better and more scientific in my own feeble mind than the subjectivity involved in MM placement . Thanks from one of the new guys ! edit typo :) Hey Bob. Lets try one [1]! You first. (I have bett...

Re: Two 1921 D 5E "Bean S" LDS & VLDS?
It's later than the one without the crack. Just how late, it's hard to say. "Very late" is typically reserved for a die that is long overdue for retirement, so I would say that it's a late die stage.

Re: Two 1921 D 5E "Bean S" LDS & VLDS?
I don't think I'd add a listing for the development of die cracks as shown. There would have to be a new, larger break somewhere to qualify. If you find one without the "bean" breaks inside the S, then that would also qualify. Dennis recently sent me and early and late version of VAM 5C that resulte...

Each of the below is a guideline for proper conduct on the VAMWorld forums. Should you violate any of the rules, you will receive one warning, this warning may come as a blanket warning to the entire thread. If the warning is ignored, you will be banned, the duration of the ban is at the discretion ...

Re: Attribution 101 page question
Yes, that's not a good picture for a very far date. I would just call that a far, low date. I know there are some VAMs that have been listed for questionable date positions, and perhaps this was one of them.

Re: 1884 very far date?
Far date, but not very far. The left edge of the 1 has to be clearly past the left edge of the 4th denticle.
Take a look at this section of the Attribution 101 page that discusses date position.
