Re: 1886P Vam 12 Dubious listing

VAMs 12 and 25 are different from each other. The doubling on the 6 is stronger on VAM 12 and the date position is slightly different. I moved it out of the "dubious" section.

Re: 1892 V 3 partial collar question

It may be a little OT, but please take a look at this coin's edge. gcs_1921-S P_rim.JPGGCS0206~2.JPG Not off-topic at all, and important for people to learn. What is shown on your 21-S is not a partial collar. Remember that the collar die constrains expansion of the coin during striking. A partial ...

Re: Archive records concerning proof coins and medals available - 1885-1889

The silver dollars started as coins that would be worth a good $10K a pop today, as did the gold dollar. If they weren't futzed with, they could have developed nice color and gone up. Of course, they could have also tarnished quickly in the humidity and been cleaned a lot. I wonder if anyone has eve...

Re: Any luck at Heritage last night?

Missed out on a couple due to the timing. 88 VAM 15 brought strong money. An 81-O VAM 16 in 62DMPL went cheap. It's underappreciated.

Re: I and R numbers

When trying to express how difficult it is to find a scarce or rare VAM, it's best to express that against the date and mint as a whole. 1878 8TF have been studied for so long that the relative rarity of each variety compared to that of a common one is very well known. That series also has enough fo...

Re: PCGS/NGC PL question

PL standards have shifted around a LOT over the past 35 years at grading services. Some of the coveted old holders are the most leniently judged coins when it comes to that designation. There are coins in old DMPL holders that are barely PL.

Re: 1892 V 3 partial collar question

A partial collar is when the planchet is not fully surrounded by the collar die when struck. The edge of the coin will have reeds that don't extend the entire thickness of the coin. They're also called "railroad rims," because the edge has the shape of a train wheel.

Re: 1880-S VAM-7 Update comments, descriptions, move incorrect reverse pictures to VAM-7A page, add pics of earlier obve

I added the VAM 122 page and moved the VAM 7A entry to the eliminated varieties section. The VAM 122 page can be populated with stuff from the 7A page as appropriate.

Re: 1878 8TF

For 8TF always start with the beak to narrow it down to 1-17 or 18-23. For 18-23 you can quickly go through the possibilities. For 1-17 go to the engraved feathers. In many cases, that will narrow it down to just a couple. Then go through the possible obverse matches to see which it is. If you start...

Re: Reputability of SEGS & PCI?

Keep in mind that there have been close to 10 different reincarnations of PCI, some good, some not. This makes it hard to say what their reputability is. Yeah, the old green labels are actually pretty legit. Those with the Century Gothic font very often upgrade. They also are famous for very vivid ...

Re: Two 1921 D 5E "Bean S" LDS & VLDS?

It's later than the one without the crack. Just how late, it's hard to say. "Very late" is typically reserved for a die that is long overdue for retirement, so I would say that it's a late die stage.
