It's not what the VAM-e actually says anyway.

ISDER is independent of the SSDC, I assume you're referring to last night's VAM-e newsletter.

Re: 1896-P VAM-11, 17 or other? Help needed, please
Unless someone does a die study of this date, it's really just like kicking mud in the water. The variety is defined as a near date with weak doubling on top of the 6. The reverse was not noted as being remarkable. Until there is a detailed die study we don't actually know if there's only one obvers...

If it crossed my desk I'd call it 17 and be done with it

Re: New Book pick up, I think first edition of Guide To Morgan and Peace Dollars
That second edition is worth keeping close at hand if you ever try a date study. The early and less defined listings are usually present and more importantly, their plates are far superior to the 3rd and 4th edition.

Re: 1900-O/O/CC V-8 NO pitting
The O/O/CC part is actually in the official VAM listing. I've seen the stage with no pitting several times. It's not common by any stretch of the imagination. It is also clearly an earlier stage than the VAM 8A

Hopefully, none of the pictures turn on me and some of you might be able to read Newcomb's work.

Re: New Book pick up, I think first edition of Guide To Morgan and Peace Dollars
If you want to go back even further, the earliest attempt at Morgan Dollar variety listings is likely the Haseltine Type Table catalog from 1881. There are only four Morgans noted, One is listed as an 8TF proof, another describes the Reverse of 78 and notes it is uncirculated. There's a 1879 proof n...

Yeah, that 116A LDS is pretty spectacular. It's one of those clashes that makes you wonder how there was no letter transfer

Re: 1878-P VAM-116C EDS and VAM-140 confusion
The coin on the page is clearly circulated. The doubling on the E PLURIBUS UNUM letters is all still there throughout the progression. This had all been cleaned up nicely then got bollocksed up when the EDS of VAM 140A got listed. I will never understand why it didn't just get called 140A EDS. Your ...

Re: Something feels off in the world today
I actually got to hear them live when they played Fenway with J Geils. Same time the ANA was in Boston. Didn't know it was going on, I was just out for a stroll after dinner and wanted to say I saw Fenway.

Re: 1882S Obverse of V3 Reverse of V8
I have the coin in hand and it turns out this is an example of VAM 27. It has the same obverse as VAM 20 with the line at the top of the throat. I'm not sure I knew the VAM 3 obverse was a stage of this same obverse but it clearly is. I added comments on the VAM 3 page noting the link to VAMs 20 and...

Re: Something feels off in the world today
You could find a new 1878-CC variety. ......or you could ask me where that VAM-14A I registered yesterday is for sale and break out the wallet (after confirming my hesitant attribution). BTW, that VAM 14A is stunning and the attribution is correct. A crapton of money for a 15 point upgrade in my se...

Re: 79-S B2a Study
C'mon you just need multiple examples of each to place side by side and stare at them for hours, passing them back and forth after dinner. It helps if you have at least a couple of people that have no deep interest in varieties that agree to dinner, with no idea a lengthy research session is on the ...
