Re: 1921 D2 Variety Help Needed

Chris: The last photo you posted gave me two new – and IMO significant – things to look for after I dialed-back the black level in the image. Unfortunately, far too many of the photos in the D2 scribbles guide have been cropped so tightly that the area where the vertical scribble between upper tail ...

Re: 1921 D2 Variety Help Needed

Interesting/annoying coin. The very significant cracks at ONE are unlisted in the attribution guide, and the scribbles detail isn't quite enough to let me find a match there, despite having made a slow and determined search. A trip to messydesk may be in order (but don't be surprised if the final ve...

Look at 3CA and 3CA1.
Both have the line from the wreath to O in ONE. So does 3CA2, but by that point it has gotten pretty weak.

Greysheet is clueless in this instance on a scale that is beyond staggering.

It is the responsibility of submitters to familiarize themselves with, and fully understand, which VAMs a grading service does and does not attribute. Period.

Maybe just me, but the minor scuff marks appear to match up on the photos. Looks to be same coin in my opinion....
You know... I have to agree!
Marks under the E, L, BU, S, U, M all match.

Re: 1921-D guess the grade

OK folks. First, as points of reference, here are some October 2023 Greysheet prices to keep in mind: AU58 – $45 MS62 – $70 MS63 – $200 MS64 – $405 MS65 – $485 MS66 – $750 MS67 – $16,000 My neck is sore from shaking it side to side as I look at this coin and grapple with these thoughts: – This has t...

I think this is a 1936-D Buffalo RPM-002 (FS-502). Can anyone confirm or correct?

Re: VAM Premium Obfuscation

I recently got smoked on a 1921-D VAM 3A in PCGS 64 CAC in a GC auction. It sold for $1150 with the vig, which is strong 66 money for a 21-D. I have a hard time believing that the nasty rattler with a green sticker on it accounted for all that premium, but the holder market is sufficiently bizarre ...

The gouges next to the bow are secondary PUPs. The HUGE horizontal gouges just above the arrows in the upper tail feathers are the key diagnostic for this VAM.

With all filled letter varieties the degree of filling is incredibly important, so a photo of your coin would be exceedingly helpful.

Re: Positive Mis attribution stories wanted

I once bought a PCGS VF30 1903-S on eBay for less than Greysheet that had crappy photos and pretty significant toning on both sides. When it showed up in the mail it turned out, much to my surprise, to be a Micro-S. I thought it was undergraded so I sent it in for regrade, and it came back VF35. Dou...
