Re: Legal or Not?
My point also. I wonder if it would be considered legal tender, just defaced. But I have to believe they got some type legal ruling or exemption before striking them.

Re: Legal or Not?
While the dies might have been legally obtained that would have been over 100 years ago. I wonder what the agreement with the Mint was in those days on reuse of cancelled dies? From the NGC web site: "After their useful life is over, dies are usually destroyed by a mint. Sometimes, however, they are...

Re: Early Scarface Auction Price
There are some crazy things out there right now and I don't know if they are selling, but for sure there are lots of listings. There is an 1881-O listed by a big eBay seller for $1,993.75 bragging it is a GEM BU graded coin. Actually, it is a N92 Cleaned coin with uncirculated details. Just for fun ...

Legal or Not?
I ran into this post on reddit today and cannot believe this is legal. https://www.reddit.com/r/coins/comments/rjyxgp/the_first_of_our_1884cc_morgan_dollar_restrikes/ There are some guys making "tokens" from cancelled 1884-CC dies, and ANACS is grading them as tokens. Surely this isn't legal? They a...

Re: Big Shoutout to Roger B
I am still researching but there is a reference to the French Mint supplying the needed medal inventory to the US Mint during this period. This is reinforced by the Dupree designation on the bust shoulder, because there are references to later dies made in America lacking this feature. For sure Roge...

Big Shoutout to Roger B
I had a chance to reach out to Roger this week to try and solve a mystery with one of the more obscure medals in my collection. I had exhausted every resource I could think of including medal collectors. For those of us who rely on Roger's expertise with research, especially with historical governme...

I like colwillys note because the older I get the greater magnification I need, and I am easing up on the big 75. Maybe I need a 75x.

Re: Meet your new Official Attributors
Thanks and maybe the 81-O is a good place to work. The die crack study has given me a lot of insight into the physical die use and I know of several examples where dies are just lumped into either 1 or a when there is clear evidence of their shared characteristics. Just let me know if I can help and...

Re: 1881-O November Update
If your coin is PL or DMPL in all likelihood the coin was struck before the cracks appeared, or after a die was repolished. Thew die cracks often only appear on later die states and help with identification when they are present.
Thanks for checking it out.

Re: Meet your new Official Attributors
On a slightly different track, will there be any review of seemly "dead" listings where a single coin might have been attributed way back?
Do you plan any review of VAM designations and some type general cleanup of the listings?

1881-O November Update
Running a little late because of family visits, but I have now posted the update for the 1881-O for November This month I tackled the die cracks for VAMs 27, 33, and 33B This was also an upgrade to Windows 11 for all my PCs which took a little time Hope you enjoy http://www.1881o.com/2021-11.html An...

Re: New Orleans coinage 1857-June 1880
Thanks for finding this reference as always. Maybe I am just thinking about other references to CSA coinage and not New Orleans specific.

Re: New Orleans coinage 1857-June 1880
Probably my age, but I thought there were some CSA records of letters documenting (bragging) about the capture of the Mint and coins struck with existing and altered dies.
