Re: what caused this?
Yeah, that looks like lateral motion of the die after the strike, not a feature of the die.

That sucks, Dennis - sorry to hear!

Re: Back from LVA - three 1883P kills! (one inadvertent)
According to my conversation with Leroy, the old v18a discovery piece becomes the new v7a discovery piece and the old vam 7a discovery piece becomes just another vam 7a. So, whoever has them should take note. You already mentioned that, Brian. If only you had shown the same sense of zeal and urgenc...

Re: Back from LVA - three 1883P kills! (one inadvertent)
Hey folks-who-can-edit: can you take a look at the 1883P VAM 1 page? The grouping and pagination of the photos is slightly off; the reverse of Die 1 is showing up as the first photo in the Die 2 section. Thanks for any edits you can make! Whoa! The conversion script got thrown off by seeing "full c...

Re: Back from LVA - three 1883P kills! (one inadvertent)
@vamsterdam - I wasn't directing any animosity toward your discovery, Brian, not at all. As you say, you sent in an example of a clash that was unlisted at the time. I do see a general trend, however, especially in folks new to this scene, toward the mentality of "I don't recognize it, so I'll send ...

Back from LVA - three 1883P kills! (one inadvertent)
Hi gang, Just got my package back from LVA, and wanted to report three 1883P kills, with one being redesignated. I’ll post the letter and photos tomorrow. Die studies can get sort of strange. There is the temptation to forge ahead with one’s own nomenclature, but like many other silver dollar aficio...

Re: Minimum Grades for Coins to LVA
I agree that there's no way to set a minimum grade for submission to LVA. If you're looking for a new listing, you should send sufficient example(s) to show clear differentiation. For a huge cud, die break, or Hot-Lips-level doubling, then even a VG could show that. If the variety submitted is simil...

Re: Toner Newp..
Very pretty! I do love nice toning, but keep 'em separated from my VAM collection since it's hard to see the die details through all that dark color. But that's a toner keeper!

Re: SOMBODY NEEDS A HUG
Aw, hugs! Getting back all no-grades is indeed rough. What JB said - many of the coins that I've sent in that didn't get slabbed simply looked good at arms length. When you get in close, there are sometimes surface marks, treatments, and tarnishing that might prevent proper grading. And, indeed, som...

Re: Very Nice 1921-P VAM-3CE?...
1921-P VAM-3CE? And if so, I'mma try to kill it... Usually when we say we want to "kill" a listing, it is because we suspect that it is a duplicate of another listing and we want to eliminate one of the redundant listings. Do you indeed think that the VAM 3CE is a duplicate of some other ...

Re: 1921-P help needed
Hi Dennis,
The VAM 86 discovery coin matches the features in all of these photos. It's a much earlier die state than your coin, as there are no visible breaks at all. Let me know if you want to borrow it in order for LVA to make a clarification.

Re: Does anyone have a 1921-P VAM 86?
Huh. Well, there's just that one photo on the VAM 66A page. I will say that I don't think this VAM 86 matches it, as that photo shows the wreath stalk over the O in ONE going straight into the leaves, whereas this example has a bit of polishing such that the stalk is slightly separated from the leav...

Re: Does anyone have a 1921-P VAM 86?
This coin matches all of the features noted on the current VAM 86 page. It's clearly not a VAM 66A, since it doesn't have that break at the O in ONE; it doesn't really have any notable breaks at all. In looking at the VAM 66 page, the scribbles photo shows a lot of parallel "to the right and a littl...

Hi Ron,
Thanks for posting so many great photos! Makes attribution so much easier...
Not a VAM 35. The key feature here, muted in the late die state, is that notch to the left of the first 8.
I would call this example a VAM 21 Rev Die 1 LDS

What a fascinating thread. As the self-declared 1883-P "expert" around here, I would be remiss if I didn't chime in... Since we've started talking about this die pair specifically (all those fun hints leading up to it!), the coin you posted is indeed an 1883 P VAM 14. It is late die state (LDS) with...

Re: PCGS attribution question
Hi Dan, I don't think that PCGS necessarily makes that level of distinction. "PCGS will attribute 317 Morgan and 52 Peace dollar varieties." That listing is here: https://www.pcgs.com/vamvarieties They list just the 80P 1A and not the more granular 1A1. But as you note, that's clearly not a comprehe...
