Re: V189 population/grade question

In 18+ years of gathering VAM sales data I have only seen 4 Mint State sales – two MS62s and two MS61s. No telling, of course, whether any of them were the same coin(s). 1878 7TF R78 189 62 PCGS Jun-23 H $3,840 1878 7TF R78 189 62 NGC Nov-22 E $3,827 1878 7TF R78 189 61 PCGS Oct-19 E $4,000 1878 7TF...

Looks like it will have to go in the next batch to VSS.

SEGS serial #s-- why SO long?

Nineteen freaking digits, which in math-speak means quintillions.
Does anyone know why they are so bizarrely huge?

Re: 1921-d vam 9A

Have you contacted or sent the PCGS attributers with this updated information? Heavens no. We're just collectors, so we don't know anything about anything. Worse yet, we're VAM collectors, which also makes us just clueless, whining idiots that should be tuned out and ignored. PCGS is the Supreme Au...

Re: 1921-d vam 9A

Theoretically possible. But our confident conclusion is there is no such thing as a 9A. Instead, PCGS parroted an existing (pre-scribbles era) attribution that had been given for an eye-catching characteristic (filled letter) rather than for coins produced by a unique identified die pair. Not long a...

Re: 1921-d vam 9A

While researching a lengthy article that John Goldsmith and I wrote on this topic in 2021, we tracked down most of the known PCGS examples of VAM 9A. Here is a brief excerpt: Because of how small and incredibly helpful the VAM community is, we set out to see how many VAM 9As we could track down. We ...

Re: 1921 VAM-1, 17-Berry Reverse

If you put a wide reeding 1921-P side by side with a regular reeding 1921-P, the difference will jump out at you.

And then there's this neck-wing gap scratch, which can sometimes be tricky to see:

VAM 13 is a wide reeding variety. Have you checked for those major pickup points?

Interesting. I can't find a match either. The closest I came was 84, but I don't think that's it. 23 made me pause too.

Sorry Chris, but my interest in the 1886 date begins and ends with VAM 20.

Raw Trade dollars order that was posted as "Received" on July 28 (just a straight raw grading order; no variety attributions) is still stuck at "Received".

another mystery 1921-S

Not a huge amount to go on with this one, aside from some decent cracks. There is a Z shaped group of chunky polishing lines (?) in the lower right scribbles zone, and a vertical die scratch (?) in the upper inside of the ear. I also see modestly doubled/tripled left and right stars. Thanks for any ...

Re: 1921-D VAM-1N2 to 1N3 transition point?

Does anyone have a VAM 1N3, with the crack above the T into the rim, in low grade (VGish) for the purpose of showing how the break on the D looks when well worn? If I'm going to list a VAM 1N4, I want to be sure that it can still be differentiated from VAM 1N3 in lower grades where the rim is still...

Re: Crack-filled 1921-D

Thanks Chris! LOTS of minor markers are a perfect fit, although the coin I have here is a much later die state than the one I photographed for the attribution page. That one has none of the most dramatic cracks (nose, chin, back of hair, over ONE, or above the 1st S) shown in this thread. Matching s...
