Re: Thorn Head question

I know very little about Thorn Heads. Recently I received my bulk submission from JB. 1. 1878-P VAM-9 no grade 2. 1880-P VAM-53A AU-50. It seems like I'm growing a grading set of these. :) 3. 1921-S VAM-1B5 XF-40 Is the 1B5 a good find? In the SSDC it seems like there are fewer 1B5s than some of th...

Re: Thorn Head question

The bit above the ear looks like a planchet defect. Thanks John. Where I am stuck is with what I see as a 'transition area.' It seems to me there is an area where a die crack turns it self into a planchet delamination somehow. To me it is as if the die crack 'sucks up' the faulty planchet laminatio...

1B7 is pretty much in a class of its own.
Dennis. Would you have a photo of a 1B7 to share? I am interested in this area above the ear on a 1921 S I have been studying. Thank you. Appreciate all your help.

Re: Lamination vs. cracked planchet?

Nice Coin! From my view here, there seems to be a lot going on above the 'UNITED' at rim.
I thought lamination & cracked planchet errors were the same.

Re: 2 sided strike thru?!??

In your first photo of the Rev., the 'UR' part of PlURIBUS that did make it onto your coin seems to be disportionately larger than a normal 'UR'. Maybe it is just distorted somehow. Is that the case? Interesting coin. Thanks for sharing.

Re: Another Darkside Illusion? 1922-S

i usually get a well-ventilated area with a jar of acetone, with a lid and let the coin just sit in there for a while, minutes, hours, days, depending on how difficult crap like that is to get off. usually a q-tip dipped in acetone and a light spinning motion will tell ya if it is easy or difficult...

Can this be a new VAM or existing VAM? What do you guys think?
Seems to me you are not asking a yes or no question. Please clarify. I want to vote!
Thanks.

Nea.
I would first use 'Variety Slabbing Service' and get their opinion on how to proceed with your coin. IMO. That's what I would If I had any doubt. It maybe would help with pressure on you and Leroy.

Thanks John, I appreciate the input and patience. No VAM 2N.

Re: I Poked This 1890 P With A Stick and ...

I would like to venture a guess. Thanks bjsilverfox. counterfeit; IMO. A gouge in a working die that huge would not escape the scrutiny of these good folks here. The area under the ear is suspicious' The rim at 'UNUM'. The Stars and Denticles all seem deformed. Note: I did not consider fire mentione...
