I have an 1881 S spiked 8 (unknown vam yet) with what looks like a patch of dense contained pitting directly in front of the eye and down cheek bone a bit and at first thought it was just pitting. Here is an observation that might help, using a loupe 7X from every angle it looks like a gouge even a double (split) one. The coin surfaces are PL and if I get the angle just right, the "gouge" appears to shine like the surface, like a polished path right down the middle of the haze. So maybe this ...
