89P- 23B, but what stage?
So now that I have learned more and perused the 4 variations on the website, I need advise. This coin doesn't seem to fall into any of the 4 Die stages. 1) It does have the orange peel look on the obverse, like stage 2, but none of the stars have roughness. Each star has all of their point with like...

Re: How Long Have You Collected our Beloved Morgan Dollars ???
But technology is still flawed and we probably will never see the eventual rarities of all coins. Morgans and Peace Dollars are wonderful, but nearly custom as we dial in the lost information of vams by all of your hard work. And electricity was put into the Mints when? Collecting usually starts on ...

Now the ultimate holder vs coin question... Dare you send it in for re-holdering as a 1A2?

Re: Vampicker
PCGS also had 2 labels for First Strike, a Flag First Strike and a 100th Anniversary Morgan. Should they value the same since you are buying for the coin grade? Are the lower grades (68) worth more or less since they are rarer? And why did I see some MS-70 2021-D's on the bay go for over $500 recent...

Re: Making early Morgan proof coins
I wonder how much the 3 men were paid per hour, to make a dollar, not to mention there had to be a trained grader!

Re: 80/79 P Maybe?
I really appreciate the insight, and the history of 1880. Agree whole-heartedly about the relief difference between 18 and 80. But this new information does lead to new questions. If the VAM system boil down to die differences, does it not consider the Hub? Cracks, scribbles, gouges, fingers are all...

80/79 P Maybe?
Picked this 1880P up. The glint under 2nd 8 drew me in. It appears as a grind-polish to remove the 7's bottom. The 0 seems to have a raised edge of the 9 inside the 0 near bottom. Unfortunately, the top of the 0 has a damage gouge. First star to the right is doubled. Haven't found the VAM yet, so I ...

Re: Vampicker
I actually prefer the style of the ANACS holder. It allows the reading of the Year-Mint when rowed out and wish I could find similar holders loose for temporary use. Maybe the issue is the color, the yellow tone is not an assertive color, nor does it contrast BU. It does looks great on a dark, earth...

Articulate, informative, and intriguing. Exactly the type of article that brings interest and life into coin collecting. This is the affordable fun of the quest, the value is a nice by-product.
Great starter article to resurrect Vam-e... quarterly?

Simple test for chrome?
Picked up a 91-O 1A on Ebay, Listed as "1891-O AU Mirror like" for $55. It was not listed as a 1A. I assumed that it was polished but when I received the coin it looks too shiny,. The Face is smoother than the reverse and was probably a strong EF-45. It weighs 26.658 g, Mic's to 2.73 mm Is there a s...

1896 P Vam 4 or 4a?
Picked up a 1896 P Double Star Low date, no mistaking, uncirculated. Has the gouge on the cap identical to the images on the site, however it DOES NOT have the field gouges on the UN. The VAM listing says "leaf AND series of...", it's not "may", or "or". So what do we call it? 4, 4a, or 4-half-a? Th...
