Re: 1935 Peace VAMs 1E and 1J

Impossible to tell without the discovery coins. The gouge below TRVST is the result of a feed finger scrape that could show up on several dies. No additional pictures of either discovery coin is currently available.

Re: CACG Launch

@CascadeChris will be doing attributions there. It'll be a soft launch, accepting coins from the big investors first while they ramp up. First 10 coins graded will be winners of an open essay contest.

Treat the slab as you would a 2x2 that someone wrote the grade on.

That's going to be a great sale! The only question is whether there'll be enough money in the "room" to do the coins justice.

NNP Video - Gentle Into to VAMs

The NNP has posted all of their Symposium videos from CSNS. My ramblings are mostly at a basic, introductory level, but If you're interested in watching, here's the link.

RogerB's talk about doing research is among those that are availalble.

Re: 1896-P VAM-11, 17 or other? Help needed, please

Is there a suggested way to volunteer for a die study with somone? I'd be willing... but being able might pose an issue for me. I'd be open to trying to make it work, though. Thanks again John^2... I would contact LateDateMorganGuy for guidance, as he has done many. What will be tricky with 1896 is...

Put me down for VAM 17, as well. Cataloging minutiae is only appropriate in the context of an exhaustive die study.

Re: Something for a little fun.

Another bit of security to ensure the message received wasn't garbled would have been a checksum word. This would be the last word of the transmission and would be generated by summing the indices of each code word and using the sum as an index for a checksum code word. Probably rarely necessary in ...

I would think that "Coinage Month June" could have been similarly encoded into a single word for extra security and cost reduction.

Re: Likely Unlisted 1891-CC

I'd have to see it, but I'd probably revise VAM 2, because if the current VAM 2 listing is inaccurate, it's fixable so that it reflects exactly one die pair.

Topics that come to mind for 1904 include the ramping down of production, especially in New Orleans, and the defective date punch.

Re: New Book pick up, I think first edition of Guide To Morgan and Peace Dollars

The 1971 red and white book is the oldest VAM book, as it is the first collaboration between Leroy and Mallis. The 1965 book with the black and polka-dot cover is the first book that has Leroy's die numbering nomenclature in it. It also has catalog numbers that would become those used in the VAM boo...

A Peace dollar value guide has yet to be assembled for the registry. Until then, auction prices realized are your best bet. There's also a "What's it Worth?" forum here to get answers on single coins.

Re: 1901 O VAM 65 "2 for 1" dubious listing

It was moved because it hadn't been observed. It doesn't mean it doesn't exist. That said, the die polishing lines on your coin need to match those shown on the 65A page (and those on a 65A coin that aren't shown) exactly for it to be considered to be VAM 65. I can't tell from here if they do.

Re: 1885 O VAM 25A would this be a LDS

Unlikely I'd list that as anything other than VAM 25A. It may or may not be a later die stage than the 25A discovery coin. There are so many cracks on the obverse that it'll take a lot of coins to know how and in what order they all developed. Only after this happens will I consider adding detail to...

Re: 79-S B2a Study

Missing from the progression for that reverse were the two that came earlier, but as they're dated 1878, it's pretty obvious where they go. Any time you get one die used in 8 different die marriage, that's a cool thing. When it spans 2 years, even more cool.
