Re: 1878-P V165 Value
While it is scarce, VAM 165 is one of the more common varieties in the 160-171 range. I wouldn't expect there to be much of a premium on it, if any unless it's a nice BU.

Re: 1921-D VAM-1N2 to 1N3 transition point?
It's close, but I'm going to hold out for the tops of the letters and horn being gone. The horn on the D might still be visible on the specimen shown. I'd have to be able to describe a clear, objective difference between the two, and not just say something like "more advanced retained cud." I don't ...

Re: 1921-D VAM-1N2 to 1N3 transition point?
Yes, VAM 1N3. When pictures leave you in doubt, read the specifications. 1N1: Scribbles 1N2: Break forms above D 1N3: Retained cud forms above ED I would entertain listing VAM 1N4 if presented with a coin that shows break above the D merged into the cud. It would need to be of sufficiently high grad...

Re: 1890S with Die Break through Right Star in Reverse
Yours is what was VAM 25. I believe it needs to be relisted. Someone(don't know who) said they looked at A VAM 25 and said they questioned the listing, and took it out of the formal list. I believe Leroy Van Allen had it correctly. There are some other comments on other listings saying they might b...

Re: listing changes
So how does this work ? I can see why the VAM was delisted as written and the only plate (I have seen anyway)was just of the MM. It seems if in fact the MM is only doubled due to machine doubling that part of the listing might not count But this LDS stage of the former VAM 25 seems kind of cool to ...

I see that the notification that it was eliminated was removed back in January. I'll put it back.

Re: Mint policy regarding where silver dollars were produced
The last paragraph is confusing when it shifts from talking about San Francisco to Carson City. Should it have read, "But the mint at Carson City has a capacity..."?

Looks like a bunch of us will all be at the same end of the floor. I'll be at table 1709. Doc will be at table 1927, Brian at table 1923.

Re: 1921-S VAM-? with an apparent railroad rim?
Not a partial collar. 21-S often looks this way as a result of the planchet not being sufficiently upset. On a partial collar, the reeds stop part way and then the rest of the coin is larger in diameter because the collar is not constricting the expansion of the coin there. If it were a partial coll...

That's interesting. Can you remove the coin from the capsule and take closer pictures and also the edge of the coin near there?

Re: Position of dollar dies in presses
I hadn't considered ease of ejection of the finished coin as being what seems to be the primary factor in deciding die position. Interesting!

Re: 1888-O VAM-1A2 or 1A3?
You have VAM 1A3. Grease filled dies don't matter for attributing these, and the assertion that was on the page was wrong. Maybe it was accurate at one time, but I don't know when it was added, since it was before the VW 1.0->2.0 migration.

Re: 1886P Vam 6
I'm not sure I've ever seen an actual VAM 6B. Countless coins have been submitted to me as VAM 6B, but nearly all are late die stage VAM 6, with the clashed 'n' worn from the die.

Re: 1921-S Morgan Vam-1S, Another Reverse?
Looking at the coin now. The obverse crack looks the same as VAM 1S, and perhaps it received some additional polishing on the date at some point. The reverse has no trace of scribble scratches, so I can't match it to VAM 1T's reverse. It doesn't have the stuff shown on VAM 1S, but I'd sure like to p...

Re: Trading
In the buy, sell, trade section one must set a price. Could we not also allow trading to occur where people offer a single graded Morgan (or Peace dollar) in trade for the one graded coin being offered? The rules state that all offers to sell must include a price. If you simply want to trade, it wi...
