Re: Copyright Question about Variety subheadings

One thing is for sure here. If I do not know what a word is I look it up. You speak of classification taxonomy. So now I am more confused. Taxonomy is a branch of biology that classifies all living things. I learned something new today Thank you very much! You might find that the word, not the fiel...

Re: Copyright Question about Variety subheadings

I try to keep my VAMming simple. Not sure why your approach seems so complicated, to me anyway. What you do, that I am aware of, is elegant (simple). As you have stated in previous posts, VAMming is secondary to what you do. A consequence. Or even an afterthought. Classification adds a layer. For m...

Re: Copyright Question about Variety subheadings

You could always consult with a lawyer like Mitch did:) Might be less expensive to follow my advice. Recently, I have had as many as 4 lawyers concurrently tapping my checking account. Best money I ever spent. I doubt that I can realistically follow your advice; but I shall advocate heeding your ad...

An "anonymous" copyright claim is very difficult to enforce. All contributors should be listed if you are serious about claiming copyright. Also, have you looked at the creative commons and educational exclusions? I have studied the various social media platform agreements, including Creative Commo...

Copyright Question about Variety subheadings

I am working on a table of cross-references from die numbers to die classifications and varieties. The die numbers are unique to our studies. Am I allowed to use the variety subheadings verbatim? For example: 1883-O Series: Cross-references From Die Number to Class and Variety OD# RD# ODC RDC Die Cl...

Gouges within LIBERTY are commonly used as lock attribution details, since they are generally very distinct to the die. Most often though, we have tiy scratches within the letters themselves which are a task to see even with a loupe.
Notice that the "gouges" spared the serifs.

Re: 1891-S VAM?

However, whatever the obverse die is, it has a very distinct and interesting set of gouges within LIBERTY. LIBERTY is a positive on the die; correct? The height of the letters, on the die, is near, or at, field level. In this case, the letters proper appear to be protected rather than vulnerable. P...

I ruled out VAM-23 due to different date location.
As did I. I was more intent on outlining a process. I would, however, like to see putative C3c and C3g reverses in hand. The Die Study Roll Call lists Alan for the 96O.

Re: 1896 o questions

So it’s vam 3? Inconclusive. All that is "known" is that the reverse was minted by a die that classifies as either C3c or C3g. To lock your coin as VAM-3 , there needs to be more study. Notably, was the obverse minted by a die of the III2-1 classification? This is required of the V3 variety. You ne...

Re: 1896 o questions

I agree with Lee that the reverse fits the VAM-3 C3c classification (borderline C3g). Nonetheless, if you are studying this coin, you would want to clarify the C3g classification shown for VAM-23 . The file lines indicate that your coin was minted from the same reverse die that minted the reverse sh...

Re: 83 o vam 36 or 36 a?

The last state of 36A before the E completely disappears and reverts to what I consider v36. Nice pick for the dinero! 8-) A polemic suggestion. I happen to agree. Except, that the E does not "completely" disappear. And "last state" may equal new stage. A picture of the cap top may be of interest. ...

Thanks for checking. Your coin must be of a pre-clash stage. The cap top fooled me. Nonetheless, beautiful coin.

Re: Opinions on 1883O VAM4

Thank you for taking a look at the region above the d. Does your coin have a cap V clash (or two) between the eagle's left wing and the first wreath cluster? I have indicate this region by a red box that shows a cap V clash. I do not study grading. Hopefully, someone else will chime in about that pa...

Re: Opinions on 1883O VAM4

You are welcome. VAM-4 is a special die pair, albeit not rare, but certainly underappreciated. Additional markers are indicated by the red boxes for the obverse and the reverse . You will need to click on the region of a red box to view at the highest resolution. I have a special interest in the red...

Yes, your photographs are of VAM-4 . In addition to the down O/O shown by your MM closeup, your full coin photograph shows the metal below the date. Additional high resolution photographs are available here . Strictly speaking, you need to verify the doubled 18-3, but the markers cinch the die pair....

Re: 1888-S Morgan Dollar Die Study

Keep in mind that the purpose of a die study is NOT to find examples of specific VAMs, just to identify different dies and die marriages. Tying dies and die marriages to specific VAMs is just an outcome if it can be done at all. Excellent work. I appreciate the hours and expense that is apt to have...
