Re: Seeing stars (and more) - can you guess the VAM?

I'll have to dig thru my examples this weekend and see if I have one. I'm not sure I do, I don't specifically recall having a clashed VAM 6 in hand, but the one sided clash on VAM 18 leaves no doubt that the episode occurred in a previous marriage Possibilities for there to be no clashed VAM 6. The...

Re: Sleeper Set

I don't want to say how many to pick. I'd rather you come up with a list of cuds, rank them by impressiveness, then we'll figure out where to draw a line. As was mentioned earlier, the "cud city" slot in the Wow list is a good place to start.

That's not the reverse for VAM 2B. Take a look at 13 and 27.

Re: Sleeper Set

And please realize I have no idea what I am doing coming up with this list. Maybe the answer is two separate sets one minor cud starter set , and one very elite killer cud set  I would just go ahead with the killer set. Not being able to finish a set by getting simply the "easy" ones will ...

Re: Sleeper Set

How about a Killer Cuds Set? This will take a wiki search from me and will cause all sorts of mine is bigger than yours debate. We would also find the true and accurate meaning of VLDS and ULDS ? Come up with a list and request it. It'll get reviewed for accuracy and completeness, then added. Early...

Re: Sleeper Set

Have you tried basing your set on a specific cause -- such as only collapsed dies, or only reverse clashes, etc.? To John R's point, there is a Clashed E reverse set defined on the SSDC Registry. It requires 22 coins to be complete. There are currently 13 sets registered in this category that are a...

Re: Sleeper Set

it said "sleeper set" not" impossible set ". I am sure every person on this forum has looked for that 11A . Maybe there is a bog of them somewhere and maybe not  A good set has coins that are easy, some that take a bit of work, and a couple that will have you rejoicing calamitously when found.

"The platform offers a comprehensive database of U.S. and world coin values, updated regularly to reflect the latest market trends and expert analyses." Methodology, please? Anyway, I Googled (Duck-duck-went, actually) the founder and all I got was hits on LinkedIn and the website being announced. T...

Re: Sleeper Set

While were on clashes, 1884-S VAM 11A is a very strong In and ust clash, and even I like it. I don't know if there are more known than just the discovery coin.

Looks like you're right. I wonder how often the 'tr' is filled on that die pair.

PCGS labels both VAM 14.1 and 14.1A as VAM 14.1. The clashed one (14.1A) is common, while the unclashed one (14.1) is quite rare.

Re: Vam identification purely from placement of design elements

Messydesk has the idea, except the reference points must be within the central design, but not to a junction of field and element edge or any external point. I think the only point I chose that would be problematic in this respect is the tip of the bust, as it can stretch from wear or be polished a...

1881-O VAM 16. Cool collapsed reverse die, always DMPL. Obverse still DMPL on its next marriage. Of the 1000ish coins I went through on Hawkeeye's 81-O project, I think maybe 2 were VAM 16. This variety is both rare and cool.

Re: Merely a question

I would think it is situational as well… If the listing was specifically for obverse features and both pairs show no real listable features on different reverses, then die pair 1&2 “should” be adequate? Because the obverse is the listing. Does that sound fair @messydesk ? Sort of. The 1921 3P examp...

Re: Merely a question

There's no hard and fast rule as to why Leroy chose to do that, but typically it was because he felt the main features were substantially the same as those of another die pair. I have stopped doing this and have started undoing it for a few dates. 1878-S had many varieties listed like this, but I wo...

Did the Mint roll dollars in 1878? I seem to recall that was not a thing at the time.
It wasn't. I would consider an original roll of Morgans one that was rolled by a bank fresh from a bag that was opened once rolling became a thing.

Re: Vam identification purely from placement of design elements

I've described it here several times (including above), and on other hobby message boards. The methodology is similar to what VAM collectors already do, except it uses only stable reference points -- as decided by the variety organization members. Four items cover it: Method: 1. Select two or three...

Re: 8TF

8 different obverse dies and 5 different reverse dies doesn't sound like an original roll, rather one that was put together from searching treasury bags. Either way, still cool.
