Re: 1882-CC die use confusion - 2, 3 and 7 incest
I have it it my notes as a marker for the VEDS of VAM 3. That clash on the reverse also gets polished before another clashing event occurs. I'll link this thread to the VAM 3 page.

Re: Guess the mystery die scratch coin?
I have this in my notes as a marker for the VAM 19 reverse (shared by 23). I called it the 'pope hat'. For 23 I noted it as just a trace

Re: 1882-CC die use confusion - 2, 3 and 7 incest
You need to take a long look at those lines. They are similar but not the same. You have an EDS VAM 3, It is not the same obverse as VAM 2 or any of its stages. All show the lump on the 2nd 8, which is clearly not present on your coin

Re: 1882-CC die use confusion - 2, 3 and 7 incest
It's not that complicated. VAM 7 was discovered because it HAD to exist. There is clashing on reverse of the earliest stage of VAM 3 that is not mated with similar clashing on the obverse. The clash had to occur in a different marriage. After years of searching, Mark Daveler found what would become ...

Re: Denver in October?!
I work offsite and won't be in Denver for this show. Maybe the next time the ANA has a show there. I've set foot in the home office three times since the move to Colorado - all during shows. And Voodoo Doughnut is worth the walk from the convention center even if they don't have the habanero jelly d...

Re: OT: 1966 clashed Washington quarter - who to ask about?
Strong double clash but it appears to be in the typical alignment. Even when they are doing listings, they only note a handful of the 'typical' clashes for illustration. If it crossed my desk, it would get the generic 'clashed dies' designation if requested.

Re: Is there a trick to photographing overstruck coins to make the original more visible?
Here's a solid example of a piece that's clearly been overstruck. Not a great deal of the host coin is still visible, but there's enough to ID the undertype. I don't think his images required anything more that his usual level of skill. https://www.civilwartokens.com/Listing/Details/3546324/178267-f...

If you are going to the FUN show in January, I'll be there at the company table offering examinations and opinions, Messydesk is usually there with his photo set up as well.

All I know about our(VAMs)present standing in the market is I'm as busy as I've ever been and many of my submitters are fairly new names. Numismatics in general is in better shape now than before the pandemic.

It's often the right (and kinder in the long run) thing to tell someone they're probably or definitely wrong.

Re: Is there a trick to photographing overstruck coins to make the original more visible?
Just a suggestion here for any newer collector - before dropping thousands or more on fancy equipment because you think you see 'something' , send the piece to someone who actually knows what they're doing. A couple of us are professional attributers and one of us is a fairly skilled photographer as...

5th edition VAM book digital release
I just got an email from Michael Fey's company announcing the release of a 5th edition of the work in a three part digital format. Don't have details on what the listings from after 1999 will look like, but I'd think it's fair to say more information will be coming soon.

Re: 1878-P 'broken N & M' obv die incest ordering?
The N and M feature is a hub break. 3 different obverse dies are involved. For one, Jeff Oxman's 7/8TF guide listed it as VAM 40, then 31 then 110. The second is VAM 145 then 162 if I remember correctly. I'd have to look at them side by side in hand to verify that however. VAM 200 was the only use o...

The coin was done by ANACS in November 1992 and there was a difference of opinion about the piece.

Re: Proof vs biz reeding
Looked at Dannreuther's book again and in part one there is a brief discussion about collars in the introductory text. He states it's an unreliable and potentially misleading diagnostic for proof vs business strike attributions on reeded edge coins. He likely didn't catalog the edges because he didn...

Re: Proof vs biz reeding
The next time I have a proof Morgan cross my desk, I'll try to remember to shoot a picture of the reeding. I will strongly caution you that the edge is unlikely to be a useful diagnostic unlike something like an Indian Head cent. As a comparison, I went thru my copy of John Dannreuther's epic book o...
