Re: Seeing stars (and more) - can you guess the VAM?

The polished obverse clashing is always present on a VAM 18. The clash occurred during its use for VAM 6.

Re: 1878 CC Vam 2B?

But it is the correct obverse for VAM 2B so that should narrow it way down

Dies by a left-handed engraver who was once a carnival barker...?

Re: Sleeper Set

Oh, we've got sets on top of sets for the registry. If you can dream up reasonable parameters, there's a decent chance the set already exists in the SSDC registry.

Re: Sleeper Set

A good chunk of these made the JR list along the way. Others are solid candidates for future inclusion. Think I have this coming year's set picked out, but it's not firm yet. I've been thinking we could do a registry set from the stuff on my annual list that wasn't already on another list. It would ...

Re: 1888-S VAM 5 with Over polished obverse

With the discovery piece in hand, I can confirm you have a VAM 5A, and in a later stage than my example. The overpolishing at the initial and lower hair is not on my example. Probably not enough for a separate listing but certainly worth noting on the page.

Re: Vam identification purely from placement of design elements

If you have a superior, reliable and functional system of measurement for Morgan Dollars I'd strongly encourage you to publish it. I attribute a wide array of series, and their methodology varies. If you've done multiple series, then you know the learning curve from one to another is fairly brief. I...

Re: Vam identification purely from placement of design elements

Overtons without the T vs I alignment aren't pretty. And that early half dime book kicks the sh!t out of most other references. Scroll ending matrix charts are awesome.

It works well in practice, but whatever. You don't approve so it must be wrong.

Darkside milestone achieved

Opened today's mail and the 27-S I took a chance on turned out to be a VAM 3. It was the last piece I needed to complete my standard Top 50 set. I might still chase a couple of upgrades. I might be able to pass Ash, but I don't see how I'd ever catch Tom or Dr. Close. The SSDC Registry is fun - just...

Re: Leroy Explains C4/C3 Reverses

Van Allen would have been acutely aware of his own work as he cataloged manytwo olive reverse descriptions after this date.
The tricky part has always been working backwards after a new wrinkle is uncovered. The necessary revisions and kills are much harder than new listings.

Re: Vam identification purely from placement of design elements

The date position is routinely guaged but relative position to the denticles. That's convenient, but not the best way. ALL measurements must relate to the central figure. This is the only way to ensure consistency. It is - the denticles are counted relative to the point of the neck. In practice thi...

Not just possible, probable. Recognizing a new feature like this could easily lead to duplicate listings.
