Re: clueless about this 1921-S

VAM-1CZ looks like it might have your break through the AM but as there is only one pic for that VAM I'm not sure what else is out there. http://ec2-13-58-222-16.us-east-2.compu ... -S_VAM-1CZ

1878-P wing halo

Just curious if anyone knows what this is. I've seen it on a few coins before but not quite as noticeable as this. Also looks like some PMD where someone tried to engrave the missing wing area. Toning matches so looks like it was done long ago. Possible that it was done at the mint to get an idea of...

1922-P VAM?

I've got a 1922-P that I just can't place. I think VAM-8 is the closest but the cracks don't line up. I feel like I've gone through the list twice and just can't place it. I don't usually deal with Peace dollars much so any help would be appreciated. It's in an NGC slab MS-64.

Were it not in a slab, I'd have you poke it with a stick, since it looks like glue. As for the variety, check VAM 14.
Thanks Messydesk, as you say it's slabbed so I can't soak it and poke it, but I see what you are saying. I did look at VAM 14 but I don't have the lines in the ear.

1889-S delamination?

I've got an 1889-S in a PCGS MS-63 I got the other day and found a few things I'd like an opinion on. I think it's a Vam-2 but I've noticed a few things on it that don't show up on the VAM-2 page. The main thing is what looks like a delamination if I'm not mistaken but as I've never had one before j...

Re: 1883-S Morgan VAM-13 What does "Empty Nest" mean?

Gotcha! That makes sense. So where is the discovery coin of the 1878-S VAM 2? If it were found to have other features that made it a new VAM would that not mean that the VAM 2 would have been killed? or am I not reading how that works correctly.

Re: 1883-S Morgan VAM-13 What does "Empty Nest" mean?

I'm confused, not that that should come as a shock  , but how can we have no known examples of a VAM that was discovered? Isn't the discovery a known example?

Re: Broken Planchet with Rim Clip

It's so cool to read the different views of the same coin. Amazing amount of knowledge here. So much to learn. Thanks for the lessons.🐍 I totally agree. Having only been doing this for less than a year this site and its members are a font of knowledge and there is a continual stream of information ...

The edge photo suggests copper oxide inclusion. It is not a "clip."
for those, like me, unfamiliar with metallurgy, could you explain what a copper inclusion is? I've tried looking but get a whole bunch of copper oxide info that isn't totally relevant to coinage. Thanks.

Re: Broken Planchet with Rim Clip

nice ragged edge clip. people do collect these. Good to know, thanks for the answer. So would this technically be classified as damage or is it an error where the planchet was cut from the roll. Just trying to reconcile how I list this on my spreadsheet, for description, grade and value. I doubt th...

Thanks for all the answers everyone, sorry, I should have mentioned that it is a peace dollar and it doesn't have a huge planchet error.

Re: Broken Planchet with Rim Clip

Very cool coin. Question? Does the effect of a broken planchet affect the grading or cost of the coin? I've got a '21 stamped on a broken planchet and was not sure if it would change its grade or value. Thanks.

Re: 2021-D "bag marks"

The X scratch looks raised to me, the edge scratches look like it had been turned against something hard, I've got several like these that look this way, one with some of the reeding cut off at an angle as if someone took a file to it to rub off some excess silver. Overall quality control is very sp...

Re: 2021-D "bag marks"

Also scratches along the edge of the rim on two of my 2021-D's, the packaging was spotty as well with many open, even some of the capsules. Looks like it had been tossed around a lot. My Peace and Philly were both packed much better. Just depends on the person at the mint packing your package. Not s...

Now comes with bag marks! Trying too hard to make them look like originals. Mint's a joke, and not a funny one.
